first_img\R San Francisco, Jul 20 (AFP) Microsoft has said its revenue and profit climbed in the recently ended quarter, getting results from its bets on cloud computing services and artificial intelligence. The US tech giant reported its net income increased 10 percent to $8.8 billion on revenue that was up 17 percent to $30.1 billion when compared with the same period last year.Microsoft saw revenue gains across its full range of businesses including business services, gaming, internet search ads, its consumer software including Windows and Office and LinkedIn, the recently acquired professional social network.Shares were up more than three percent to $107.80 in after-hours trading following the release of earnings for the quarter ending the fiscal year quarter for Microsoft.”We had an incredible year,” chief executive Satya Nadella said in a release.”Our early investments in the intelligent cloud and intelligent edge are paying off, and we will continue to expand our reach in large and growing markets with differentiated innovation.” Microsoft executives told analysts they expected another year of growth, with demand for computing on the rise and the technology giant well-positioned in that market.”We’re investing aggressively to build Azure as the world’s computer,” Nadella said, referring to Microsoft’s cloud computing platform that competes with services run by Amazon and Google.”We expanded our global data center footprint to 54 regions, more than any other cloud provider.” Despite continuing to invest in promising trends from cloud computing and artificial intelligence to gaming, Microsoft expected its profit margins to improve.Revenue in a productivity and business processes category that included career-focused social network LinkedIn was up 13 percent in the quarter to $9.7 billion, according to Microsoft.advertisementLinkedIn revenue increased 37 percent as usage soared, the earnings release indicated. LinkedIn has seen record levels of postings seeking employees due to a robust US job market, according to Microsoft chief financial officer Amy Hood.Microsoft bought LinkedIn two years ago in a deal valued at $26.2 billion.Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry described Microsoft earnings and its financial path as “super solid,” noting that revenue and earnings per share beat market expectations.Microsoft reported net income of $16.6 billion for the fiscal year on revenue that rose 14 percent to $110.4 billion.Analyst Patrick Moorhead at Moor Insights & Strategy said Microsoft’s results showed healthy growth.”The company drove double-digit revenue growth in every business, which demonstrates to me the firm’s balance,” Moorhead said. “Satya Nadella and team are hitting on all cylinders at this point.” In a major deal announced this week, Microsoft and Walmart unveiled a strategic partnership to help the retail giant ramp up its efforts against Amazon.”I’m especially proud that Walmart chose Azure and Microsoft 365 to accelerate its digital transformation for their associates and customers,” Nadella said during the earnings call.Microsoft has announced technology partnerships with other major firms in recent months including General Electric, Starbucks, Bayer, Spain’s Telefonica and sports organizations such as the NBA and PGA.Moves into business services and cloud computing have reduced Microsoft’s dependence on Windows, the dominant software for personal computers that has been overtaken in the consumer market by mobile devices powered by Google or Apple software.Microsoft has taken to offering software such as Office as subscription services hosted online, even providing applications for Android or Apple mobile devices.Nadella said Office 365 has more than 135 million users, and that a mobile version of Outlook is used on more than 100 million devices powered by Android or Apple software.Microsoft 365 is now a multibillion dollar business, according to Nadella.Microsoft expected that by the end of this calendar year it would close a $7.5-billion stock acquisition of software development platform GitHub.Created in 2008, GitHub allows developers to cooperatively manage software and has more than 28 million users around the world.”With GitHub we recognize the increasingly vital role the developers play in value creation and growth in the area of the intelligent cloud and intelligent edge,” Nadella said.(AFP) AMSAMSlast_img read more

Marcus Lattimore, the South Carolina running back who suffered one of the more gruesome leg injuries on a football field last fall, demonstrated to NFL scouts how far he has come since his surgery on his mangled right knee.“I was a little nervous,” Lattimore told reporters after his workout. “But excited, too, that I could do this.”Lattimore executed a series of drills to show evaluators from 31 NFL teams how far his surgically repaired knee is doing since the horrifying incident on Oct. 27 against the Tennessee Volunteers. He did forward and backward lunges, deep-knee bends, box jumps, step-ups and one-legged balancing drills while holding weights. All pretty remarkable considering the extent of his injury five months ago.Lattimore was praised by former teammates and evaluators, but he still has a significant way to go in his rehabilitation to be considered healthy.“They’ve seen me move a little bit. They’ve seen me use my feet, use my knee,” Lattimore said. “My knee’s fine. I think everything is going to be all right.”Five months ago Lattimore could not be as confident as he was on Wednesday about his future. He was amid another outstanding season for the Gamecocks after returning from a left-knee injury during his sophomore season. But in the second quarter of their game against the Volunteers, he was tackled at the end of a run in a way that caused his leg to contort. The result of tackle was a dislocated knee and several torn ligaments, which was a gruesome sight, his leg flailing limp. Trainers would not even allow him to see the carnage of his injury, forcing them to hold his head and chest down.“Oh my gosh, you thought it was over,” Gamecocks former receiver Ace Sanders said. “What’s he’s done shows the kind of person he is.”Lattimore, who was a projected first-round draft pick, says now that he is not concerned about where he will be drafted, just as long as he gets a phone call from an NFL team.South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said he was impressed with Lattimore’s workout, considering the extent of his injuries.Lattimore will not hold a personal pro day as he planned in January. He will allow his meetings with teams at the NFL combine and the Gamecocks pro day, along with reports from renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews be teams determining factor. He will have his knee examined by NFL personnel in Indianapolis on April 5-6, and has meetings planned with St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots. Lattimore has already met with the Eagles.“Once I get on a team, I’ll prove myself and prove that I’m a complete back,” Lattimore said. “I’ll be in full health, so I’ll be good to go.” read more

By Ramona LuthiCrime Chief, Paul WilliamsCrime Chief, Paul Williams on Friday distanced himself from the reports made by the Force that one of the three men who was slain by police at the Kingston Seawall yesterday had a criminal background. In a police press statement issued yesterday, it was disclosed that Kwame Assanah and Errol Adams were previously arrested in connection with several offences and Dextroy Cordis was recently granted bail on a simple larceny charge with regards to ‘trunking’.Dead: Kwame AssanahAccording to relatives of the now deceased, Assanah of Buxton, East Coast Demerara, the man had recently applied for a police clearance –which was granted to him- for his new job as a debt collector at Courts. When INews made contact with the Crime Chief today, he maintained that he had provided no information with regards to Assanah having a criminal history to the police public relations department, which is responsible for circulating information to the media. “The family was here just now. I spoke with them and I told them and I’m saying it again. In our Public Relations Department release, when I fortified the PR department with the information, I gave information as it relates to what is known about Errol Adams and what is known about Dextroy Cordis but at the time when I gave that information, there weren’t any information that I knew about previous records of involvement of Assanah with the police. I have never mentioned that. So I don’t know how that type of information would have gone in the midst of that. It was no way in terms of my contribution towards the press release,” he explained.Dead: Dextroy CordisNevertheless, he assured INews that he intends to follow up with the police public relations department to ascertain how the information pinning Assanah as a “known character to police” was retrieved.Aside from this, Williams was quoted in the media asserting that the officers were justified in their actions of taking down Assanah, 46-year-old Cordis also known as Dutty, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, and 57-year-old Adams also known as Dynamite of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast and Buxton, East Coast Demerara during an alleged exchange of gunfire with police.According to the police press statement on the killings, at around 10:30hrs yesterday,  on Robb Street, ranks of an anti-crime patrol unit, in an unmarked vehicle, acting on intelligence information, began following another motorcar that two “suspicious looking characters” were reportedly travelling in.The vehicles used by the alleged banditsAs the ranks continued to observe, the suspected criminals led them [police] to the Kingston Seawall where an individual who had reportedly left a city bank, had parked his motorcar. At that time, the law enforcement officials who were on the stakeout noticed the two individuals- later identified as Cordis and Assanah, exiting their motorcar and approaching the customer’s vehicle. One of the men was reportedly armed with a gun.“At the same time the police anti-crime patrol, which by now was in close proximity called out to the suspicious looking characters but the one who was armed discharged several rounds at the police who returned fire,” police explained in a statement. As such, the reported exchange of gunfire resulted in the two men being killed. The damaged unmarked police vehiclePolice then detailed that seconds after that initial exchange of gunshots, another pair of males were observed on a CG motorcycle in close proximity to the motorcar in which the deceased men were travelling in.One of the two persons on the motorcycle reportedly discharged several rounds at the police who again returned fire. This second exchange resulted in the third person, Adams, being mortally wounded. He subsequently died. His accomplice reportedly sped away on the motorcycle. At the scene, a 9mm Pistol along with a magazine containing seven live rounds and four spent shells were found next to Cordis’ body. The items found in the car used by the alleged banditsThe motorcar which was driven by the now deceased Assanah was searched and police found one driver’s licence, ten passports belonging to the deceased and his family members, a key used by “trunkers”, two handcuff keys, a bandana and clothing. first_imgDesert Lion Energy Corp has begun production of lithium concentrate, on time and inline with management’s Phase I production plan. The concentrate was produced from stockpiled material at the company’s lithium project in Namibia, which is located approximately 30 km southeast of Karibib and 210 km southeast of Windhoek, the nation’s capital. There are approximately 700,000 t of stockpiled material and 100,000 t of fines located on Desert Lion’s exclusive prospect license that will be processed over the next 12 months.“We are extremely excited about this milestone, which marks Phase I of the Company’s production plan,” commented Tim Johnston, president and chief executive officer of Desert Lion Energy Corp. “With this first production of lithium concentrate, we transition from a lithium explorer and developer to producer, and we are well positioned to become Namibia’s first large-scale lithium mining operation.”Following the production of lithium concentrate from stockpiled material, Desert Lion will commence production of lithium concentrate from in situ ore, which is expected to commence in the second half of 2019. This production schedule will be based on the results of a preliminary economic assessment, which the Company plans to publish in the second quarter of 2018.last_img read more

first_imgOne of the most recognizable items from the BioShock games is the Audio Diary, which played back voice messages during the games offering the player hints and helping the story progress. What you may not know is 2K Games had four real Audio Diary devices made as part of a BioShock 2 marketing campaign.Managing to acquire one of those four devices required a lot of hard work and an equal amount of luck. They were rewards for taking part in the There’s Something In The Sea alternate reality game (ARG) run in the lead up to the release of BioShock 2. It took the form of a puzzle-filled website, which revealed a mailing address. Players reported receiving packages after sending letters to that address, and they were delivered by mailmen dressed in 1950s uniforms.A lucky few didn’t receive a package, though. Instead they were handed a coded message that once deciphered asked the recipient to travel to a storage location on a specific date at a specific time. Once there, a man (actor) took each of the people who had turned up into the storage building, continuing to test them with questions and eventually a code that had been revealed earlier in the game through deciphering a mathematical equation. The final reward was the Audio Diary device complete with an actual voice recording that can be heard in the video below:Not everyone who attended that day got to keep the Audio Diary they listened to, but a few did, and one of those has now appeared for sale on eBay. The reason for the seller, Adam Robinson, deciding to sell such a rare and desirable item is simply hard times. Robinson needs the cash and is very reluctantly selling it.Considering only four of these Audio Diary devices are thought to exist, combined with the work and luck needed to acquire one, explains why the auction price is already north of $800 with 47 bids placed. And with 4 days still left to go I can see it easily making over $1,000.last_img read more

first_imgRussell A. Neverdon, Sr.According to the director of the Baltimore City Board of Elections, the first draft of the 2014 general election ballot (Nov. 4) was due Aug. 22, and Russell A. Neverdon Sr. is still fighting to have his name included on it as a candidate for Baltimore City State’s Attorney. On Aug. 25, attorney Edward Smith Jr., filed paperwork with the Circuit Court of Baltimore City on behalf of Neverdon, a veteran Baltimore defense attorney who has been running an independent campaign for the State’s Attorney’s office.According to the Neverdon campaign, a judge has been assigned the case and the office of the Attorney General will represent the city Board of Elections. A pre-trial conference was set for this week.Neverdon claims he collected 5,686 petition signatures, which would be significantly more than the 4,160 needed for him to be included on November’s general election ballot along with the winner of the June 24 primary for state’s attorney, Marilyn J. Mosby (she handily defeated the incumbent Gregg Bernstein by almost 10 points). However, Board of Elections director Armstead B.C. Jones Sr. has declared only 3,099 of the signatures collected are valid.State election law requires names on a petition to exactly match names on voter registration rolls and each name has to be dated. According to the Board of Elections about 500 of the submitted signatures were names of people not registered to vote in Baltimore City and another 300 signatures were not dated. After Jones determined Neverdon was a little more than 1,000 signatures short, Mosby essentially declared victory in a tweet on Aug. 15.“The verification process has (been) completed and I’m confident in BOE’s (Board of Elections) analysis. Our democracy has played out and I’m excited about next steps,” Mosby said.Despite the ruling of the Board of Elections and Mosby’s declaration of victory, Neverdon presses on.“We’re going to challenge the constitutionality of it and some of the other discrepancies and put it in the hands of the court. But, at the same time that does not challenge the fact that I’m still a candidate,” Neverdon said. “The question becomes whether your name appears on the ballot and that’s what the signature campaign was about, getting my name to officially appear on the ballot,” added Neverdon who said he is not averse to continuing his candidacy via a write-in effort. The veteran defense attorney says he agreed to stay out of this year’s Democratic primary in an effort to prevent splitting the Black vote in the race to unseat Bernstein. He says he doesn’t regret the decision.“The (overarching) goal was to give Baltimore a chance, that if they wanted change that they could do it and I felt that with two candidates challenging the same person…there was a good chance that would have ended up being the result, the vote would have been split,” Neverdon said.  “I thought it was in the best interest of Baltimore City to… make sure that didn’t happen.”last_img read more

first_imgKolkata: Expressing her sincerest condolences to the family members of Cafe Coffee Day Enterprises’ founding Chairman V G Siddhartha whose body was recovered on Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held harassment by the Central agencies responsible for his depression which ultimately led to his death. She appealed to the Centre to work peacefully so that political vendetta and agencies do not destroy the future of this country. In her Facebook post, she wrote: “I am deeply shocked by the incident relating to V G Siddhartha, Cafe Coffee Day founder. It is indeed very sad and very unfortunate. From what he has expressed, it appears that he was greatly depressed due to harassment and pressure from different agencies for which he could not run his business in a peaceful manner. This he could not resist. I hear from different sources that captains of industry in the country are under pressure; some of them have left the country and some are contemplating to move out. All the opposition political parties are afraid of horse-trading and harassment with political vendetta.” Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataShe further wrote: “On one hand, the economic growth of the country has nosedived to as low as 5.8% in the fourth quarter of 2018/19, the lowest in the last 5 years, and unemployment has increased to the highest level in the last 45 years. “On the other hand, Central government is actively pursuing disinvestment of government assets, from Ordnance Factory Board to BSNL, from Air India to Railways, from Chittaranjan Locomotive Works to Alloy Steel Plant, Durgapur and about 45 more public sector undertakings. first_imgFirefox’s unloaded tab handling got a whole lot better by Martin Brinkmann on July 23, 2017 in Firefox – 16 commentsStarting with Firefox 55, scheduled for an August 8th, 2017 release, unloaded tab handling in the Firefox web browser got a whole lot better. This should have a positive impact on all Firefox users who restore the last browsing session on start of the browser. It improves the time it takes to load the browser and also the memory consumption. To hammer home the point, Mozilla employee Dietrich Ayala ran a test with a Firefox profile with 1691 open tabs in the browsing session.Note: Startup time depends on a number of factors. All Firefox users who load the previous browsing tab on start should see an improvement in startup time and memory use. As a rule of thumb, the more tabs get loaded, the better the improvement. He tested startup time and memory performance of Firefox 20, 30, 40, and 50 to 56 using that profile. He could not test the profile in Firefox 10 as it would hang and not load the profile at all.His main findings are that startup time increased significantly from Firefox 20 to Firefox 51, decreased in Firefox 52 to 54, and then fell sharply to the lowest ever value in Firefox 55.The startup time was at its highest in Firefox 51 which took more than 7 minutes to start the browser. Firefox 52 took more than 5 minutes to start up loading the profile, and Firefox 55 only 15 seconds. For memory usage, the findings where equally impressive. Memory usage increased up until Firefox 54, and fell sharply in Firefox 55.Firefox 50 to 54 used about 2 Gigabytes of RAM when loading the profile. The memory usage dropped to less than 0.5 Gigabytes in Firefox 55.Remember that this is for tabs that are not fully loaded (read inactive). Firefox won’t load all websites in all tabs by default on session restore. This is different from Google Chrome which loads all tabs on session restore. Chrome users will notice that the browser will be largely unresponsive during that time.Chrome does not ship with a native option to load tabs on activation during start. Chrome users may use an extension like Native Lazy Tabs for Chrome to enable this functionality.Mozilla’s work on improving the loading of tabs on browser start continues. Firefox users interested in the progress that Mozilla engineers make may want to monitor Bug 906076 on Bugzilla@Mozilla.Closing WordsThe improvements are certainly impressive but that many tabs are an edge case. Still, it highlights that Firefox’s startup got a whole lot better in terms of memory use and startup time when the last browsing session is loaded.I’d like to know what made the startup time and memory use increase by this much in the past. Which changes were made that impacted it negatively? Now You: What’s the startup time of your browser? Do you load all tabs or lazy load tabs?SummaryArticle NameFirefox’s unloaded tab handling got a whole lot betterDescriptionStarting with Firefox 55, scheduled for an August 8th, 2017 release, unloaded tab handling in the Firefox web browser got a whole lot better.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more
