registered and ply in the city according to the Mumbai traffic police With an annual addition of 50000 cars apart from two-wheelers water-tankers school buses and commercial vehicles the demand for parking space would only escalate each year “Only 15 per cent of the total vehicles in the city are able to park in 92 pay-and park lots in the city and suburbs Of these 47 parking spots are in south Mumbai itself There are another 150 pay-and-park lots operated at spots by railways MMRDA and MSRDC But all of these are grossly inadequate” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B K Upadhyay Experts say that traffic snarls in the city could be cut drastically if the problem of double-lane parking is resolved Identifying this as a menace in 2014 the traffic police have so far penalised 174757 drivers for illegal haphazard double or angular parking Incidentally this figure is also the highest among all traffic violations recorded this year Of the total penalty of Rs 77 crore collected from all traffic offences in the first four months of this year Rs 154 crore come from illegal angular parking alone The police have only charged vehicles which are causing obstruction to the flow of traffic Upadhyay said “Drivers ask us where are they supposed to park and we do not have an answer We understand the problem of the driver and their helplessness due to lack of parking spaces” he said The traffic police are now stressing on parallel parking on roads so that lesser space is consumed So severe is the shortage of parking space that the traffic police have written to the Motor Vehicles Department the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to look for immediate solutions In its communications since the beginning of the year traffic police predict a serious space crunch matched with vehicle escalation making parking space grossly inadequate by 2016 BMC officials admit that the last of the assigned public parking spaces is at least a decade old with no new plots identified Traffic officials have also looked at public proposals like converting excess school grounds for parking or utilising private compounds for traffic but have often overlooked these ideas as they clash with ideas from social scientists and advocates of open space A long-pending proposal of building underground parking spaces below iconic grounds like Oval and Azad Maidan in the city is yet to be deliberated upon “In south Mumbai itself our estimate pegs the need for parking space for 10000 cars and around 20000 in the suburbs to solve the current daily parking crunch” According to the traffic police chief the only way to solve the parking issue in Mumbai is to restrict the registration of vehicles and make car-pooling compulsory and encourage public transport system mumbainewsline@expressindiacom For all the latest Mumbai News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: PTI | wrist can significantly reduce stress a new study has found Humans naturally respond to rhythm For example the tempo of a song can naturally alter our breathing and heart rates researchers said Slower tempos result in lower arousal and positive or calm emotional states while we associate fast rhythms with arousing emotional states such as joy excitement surprise fear or anger ALSO READ |Wristband that can help tackledepression Researchers from University of London in the UK assessed the calming effects of the device called doppel – a wristband designed to actively reduce stress by using the intuitive responses that we all have to rhythm and especially to heartbeats Beyond music several studies report similar effects in responses to biological rhythms and the heartbeat is perhaps the most ubiquitous biological rhythm in nature “High arousal is correlated with increased heart rate whereas calmness is physiologically correlated with lower heart rate” said Manos Tsakiris from University of London “We also intuitively associate higher and lower heart rate with anxiety or high arousal and calmness The design of doppel the device that we used in our study was inspired by these insights” said Tsakiris To test the efficacy of doppel the researchers exposed volunteers to a socially stressful situation and measured their physiological arousal and their reported anxiety levels Two groups of participants were asked to prepare a public speech a widely used psychological task that consistently increases stress All participants wore the device on their wrist and a cover story was used to suggest to participants that the device was measuring blood pressure during the anticipation of the task For one of the two groups the device was turned on and delivered a heartbeat-like vibration at a slower frequency than the participants’ resting heart rate while they were preparing their speech The researchers measured both physiological arousal and subjective reports of anxiety The use of doppel had a tangible and measurable calming effect across both physiological and psychological levels Only the participants who felt the heartbeat-like vibration displayed lower increases in skin conductance responses and lower anxiety levels “Wearable devices are becoming ubiquitous in everyday life but across the board their primary aim is to quantify our activity” said Tsakiris “The results we got suggest that rather than measuring ourselves we can instead harvest our natural responses to heartbeat like rhythms in ways that can assist people in their everyday life” he said The research
