first_img1 February 2013 The Biodiversity Management Plan for South Africa’s black rhinoceros aims to ensure the survival and sustainable growth of the country’s rhino population in the face of a changing environment and the ongoing threat posed by poaching. Gazetted last week by Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa, the plan envisages the continued existence of the global black rhino population through the continuation of viable populations of the two indigenous black rhino subspecies in natural habitats throughout South Africa. The short-term, 10-year goal is to achieve an average South African meta-population growth rate for the two subspecies of at least 5% per annum, so as to achieve meta-population sizes for the two subspecies of 3 060. The plan states that effective law enforcement, improved relations between neighbouring countries, effective criminal investigations and prosecutions, and the securing and monitoring of rhino horn stockpiles, remain key to minimising losses from poaching. Human resources should also be developed so that there are sufficient skills available to protect and manage black rhinos, while sustainable political and social support for rhino conservation efforts should be encouraged. Strict hunting guidelines are included in the plan to ensure proper control over the removal of animals from breeding populations, and to combat illegal hunting. The plan “will contribute significantly to the management and conservation of black rhino, presently under threat from poachers,” the Department of Environmental Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday. The Conservation Plan for the Black Rhino, which forms the basis of the Biodiversity Management Plan for the black rhino, was jointly developed by South African members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Rhino Management Group. The South African Rhino Management Group, which functions under the auspices of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Rhino Specialist Group, is to manage the implementation of the plan, including the legally required approval of management plans submitted by rhino conservation bodies for adoption by the government. first_img15 March 2016During the 2016 World Communication Forum (WCF) in Davos, Switzerland, BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – agreed to establish a BRICS Communicators Forum. The focus of the BRICS group would be on defining the communication strategy of the world’s five fastest growing economies, said acting director-general of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Donald Liphoko.Liphoko was part of the South African delegation at the WCF, which ran from 7 to 10 March. The 2016 conference was the seventh annual forum.“The WCF was a major success in that it provided South Africa with a platform to engage with communicators from other parts of the world, but the major highlight is that we were able to agree as BRICS countries to establish a BRICS Communicators Forum on the sidelines of the Davos WCF that is going to focus on defining the BRICS communication strategy as well as positioning the geo-political group,” he said.Listen to what Communications Minister Faith Muthambi had to say:South Africa’s ubuntuThe participation of countries such as South Africa in WCF was crucial, said Dr Jon-Hans Coetzer, the executive dean for undergraduate programmes at the Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland.“We all know the history of South Africa and now you just have to look at what South Africa has produced, what the country has brought to humanity in terms of great leadership, what it has brought to the international community in terms of big changes such as the promotion of equality for all, social justice and education in the world today.”“What I like more about South Africa is this concept of Ubuntu, which is so much part of the DNA of all South Africans. This concept is also relevant in global communication because we all need each other – business, the media, communication, education and public relations.”Coetzer said he taught ubuntu as a management concept, emphasizing to his class that without their customers and community they were nothing.About WCFThe annual meeting in Davos brings together industry leaders in public relations, marketing, media, political and business communications and corporate finances, as well as a large number of media representatives and international partner associations and organisations.According to the official website, the goal is to “unite trend-makers and influencers from the global communications elite and provide a platform for discussion focused on the future development of communications and their role in business, society and politics; to provoke in-depth analysis of the form and content of interaction between business, media, and society, on the one hand, and the state, on the other.”Source: South African Government News Agencylast_img read more

first_imgCarbon reduction is a key part of the designTogether, homes and light-duty vehicles now contribute roughly 44% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, Honda said, and developing technologies that help reduce that number is one of the project’s main objectives. In a detailed description of the house, Honda said it expected the house would generate a surplus of 2.6 megawatt-hours of electricity per year for a net offset of 6 1/2 tons of carbon dioxide. When the electric car is added to the equation, Honda said the total avoided emissions should rise to nearly 12 tons of C02.Honda looked for carbon savings wherever it could find them, including the concrete used in the post-tensioned slab. Making cement from limestone by heating it up in giant kilns is responsible for about 5% of global C02 emissions, Honda said. So half the cement in this concrete was replaced with a concrete extender called pozzolan. Energy management system can talk to the gridThe company developed a home energy management system that monitors and controls the generation and use of electricity. The electrical system, which includes a 10 kilowatt-hour battery in the garage, is designed to minimize the home’s impact on the grid by responding to changing conditions. If the grid gets overloaded, for example, the system can reduce consumption in the house and route power from its PV array to the grid. The Honda Fit has been modified to accept DC current directly from the 9.5-kW solar array, which the company said is more efficient than converting the direct current to alternating current as would normally be the case. When making power at full capacity, the panels can charge the car’s batteries in two hours.Other features of the home include:Double stud wall construction. Above-grade exterior walls are made from two 2×4 stud walls on 24-in. centers designed to eliminate thermal bridging except at the fire blocking. The 9 1/2-in. wall cavities are insulated with cellulose (R-31).Triple-glazed windows. The argon-filled casements are manufactured by Alpen.A truss roof with a vented roof deck. The roof is insulated to R-60 with cellulose.Insulated slab. Rigid foam under the concrete slab has an R-value of 10.Airtightness. The house tested at 2.0 air changes per hour at a pressure difference of 50 pascals.Lumber. All lumber used in construction came from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.Water management. There are dual-flush toilets, and low-flow faucets at sinks and showers in the 2 1/2 baths. Outside, xeriscaping is irrigated exclusively with filtered gray water.Light system. LED lighting developed with researchers at the California Lighting Technology Center mimics the natural shift in daylight from morning until night. The company calls it “circadian color control logic.”Honda said it would seek certification from LEED for Homes, the National Green Building Standard, and Energy Star.Someone from the UC-Davis community will be living in the house; the name of the future occupant wasn’t announced. Honda’s long list of consumer products already includes cars, outboard motors, portable generators, motorcycles, and lawnmowers — so why not houses? The company in March opened the doors to the first Honda Smart Home, a high-tech, net-zero energy house on the West Village campus of the University of California, Davis. It comes with many features that are becoming standard in high-performance houses — a ground-source heat pump, a roof-mounted photovoltaic array for electricity, a gray water system for watering plants, and triple-paned windows. There’s also a Fit electric car in the garage. The 1,944-square-foot two-bedroom house is designed to produce all of the power it needs, including enough juice to keep the car charged.Honda isn’t planning on building replicas of the house elsewhere, or licensing others to do so, says Marcos Frommer, Honda’s corporate affairs and communications manager. It’s intended as a demonstration project only.“It allows us to engage with the public and the technical community about a zero-carbon future while allowing us to research potential future solutions,” Frommer said in an email. “Honda will be making available for free our architectural drawings and complete specifications so that others may conduct similar research, or build this house for their own personal use.”Honda didn’t say how much the house cost to design and build. Construction started in April 2013 and the house opened on March 26.last_img read more

first_imgHound Labs caught a boost in Series D funding to create a device it says can detect THC on a subject’s breath.  Canva A company looking to create the first THC breathalyzer said Tuesday it’s raised $30 million in Series D funding. Hound Labs is aiming to enable law enforcement and employers to conduct quick drug screenings with the device, which is on track to be released this winter. The device has raised concerns about accuracy and legal implications, however.  “In order to solve the challenge of determining recent marijuana use, we spent five years developing new technology that enables unparalleled low levels of detection in a portable device,” Hound Labs co-founder Dr. Mike Lynn said in a release earlier this year. “We have been testing this technology in collaboration with one of the world’s premier research universities. After years of research and development, we are excited to have validated the Hound science and technology that will advance our collective understanding of THC in breath.”In July, Hound Labs paid researchers to get 20 people high. Once the subjects smoked cannabis, researchers tested them and found THC could be detected in minute amounts in the breath after the subjects smoked. Hound Labs said the device can also detect THC ingested via cannabis-infused foods.  4 Marijuana tech is evolving Comments Share your voice Tags 5:37 Now playing: Watch this: Sci-Tech Politicslast_img read more

first_imgButtler said AI Foundation will be announcing commercial products in the next few months, based on its decentralizeed artificial-intelligence technologies. The company has 25 employees currently, most of whom are engineers and scientists.“Our focus will be commercial development and applications that naturally come out of the foundational technologies we are developing,” Buttler said. Popular on Variety AI Foundation recently introduced the first phase of Reality Defender, software built to run alongside digital experiences (such as web browsing) to detect potentially fake media. Similar to antivirus software, it scans every image, video, and other media that a user encounters for known fakes, allows reporting of suspected fakes, and runs new media through various AI-driven analysis techniques to detect signs of alteration or artificial generation.Lars Buttler, who is AI Foundation’s CEO, previously co-founded and was CEO of Trion Worlds, a games company whose massively multiplayer online games include “Trove” and “Rift.” He said the dual nonprofit/commercial mission is central to the startup’s success.“Bringing personal AI to everyone opens up a new world of personal media, forever transforming entertainment and communications,” Buttler said.Explaining AI Foundation’s partnership with Endeavor, Buttler said the talent agency and media company represents “many great stars, people who move the world,” Buttler said. “They have a very high interest in AI and what it can do for the world as well as preventing some of the dangers.” He cited the issues that have cropped up with Deepfakes, an AI tool that allows the image of a celebrity to be be superimposed on pornography.Rob Meadows, the CTO of AI Foundation who previously founded AI-enabled software startup Originate, said the Reality Defender works today as a browser plug-in similar to ad blocker. The goal is to have the technology broadly adopted as a way to alert users when they encounter fake media on the web. With the funding, Founders Fund partner Cyan Banister and David Jones, founder of You & Mr Jones, have joined the AI Foundation’s board. In addition, Biz Stone has joined the startup’s Global AI Council advisory group, tasked with researching and evaluating how AI can “move humanity forward, as well as anticipate and counteract its risks.”“The potential to recognize the true promise of AI and to amplify the best traits of humanity are the driving values of The AI Foundation,” Stone said in a prepared statement. “The recognition and proactive approach to the possible negative impact of this technology is also reassuring.” Endeavor is among the investors in AI Foundation’s $10 million initial round of funding, fueling the artificial-intelligence startup’s development of AI tools including a system that scans for and detects fake media. It’s the first outside funding for San Francisco-based AI Foundation, founded in 2017. The round was led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund venture-capital firm and marketing-tech company You & Mr Jones, with participation by Endeavor and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Other investors in AI Foundation include movie producer Charles D. King, founder and CEO of production company Macro. The startup has an ambitious dual mission of creating both free artificial-intelligence tools to thwart the negative effects of AI as well as sell commercial products. The lofty goal of the AI Foundation: to “move humanity forward through the power of decentralized, trusted, personal AI, while anticipating and counteracting the risks of AI’s proliferation in society,” according to the company. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. first_img This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. January 28, 2019 Open most new smartphones today and you’ll find a mix of paper, card, and plastic packaging. There’s really no need for any plastic to be used outside of the product itself, and Samsung is committed to removing all of it starting this year.Samsung’s commitment goes well beyond its phones, though. The South Korean company produces a huge range of handheld and wearable devices through to large home appliances. All of them typically have some plastic as part of the packaging and Samsung plans to ditch the lot.Packaging is still required, though, so Samsung will fill that need using recycled and bioplastics. Recycled plastics ensure the plastic we’ve already produced remains useful rather than ending up polluting our oceans and water supply. Bioplastics are derived from biomass such as food waste, woodchips, corn starch, or agricultural by-products. They are by no means perfect, but require less energy to produce and biodegrade much more quickly. To begin with, Samsung is switching out the plastic used to hold phones, tablets, and wearables with pulp molds. The bags they are wrapped in will use eco-friendly materials, and chargers are being redesigned. The glossy plastic finish typically seen today on charging plugs will be replaced with a matte finish which removes the needs for plastic protection films.Home appliances will be shipped in new eco-friendly plastic bags, and Samsung is now committed to only using paper and fiber materials from trusted sources including the Forest Stewardship Council, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme, and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. This will be in place by 2020.The end goal is to be using 500,000 tons of recycled plastics by 2030 and to have collected 7.5 million tons of discarded products by then, too. By doing this, not only is Samsung cutting down the impact of its packaging on the world, but it is setting the bar for other manufacturers who will hopefully put similar initiatives into action if they aren’t doing so already. 2 min read This story originally appeared on PCMag Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now Enroll Now for Freelast_img read more
