first_imgTORONTO — A former Toronto pastor found guilty of manslaughter in the death of his pregnant wife will face a sentencing hearing today. In February, a jury found Philip Grandine guilty in the death of his wife, who drowned in her bathtub in October 2011.Anna Karissa Grandine was 29 years old and 20 weeks pregnant when she died.Prosecutors alleged that Grandine drugged his wife with an anti-anxiety medication so she wouldn’t be as vigilant while he continued an affair with her friend. The Crown said he then failed to stop his wife from getting in a bath while sedated.Grandine had previously been tried for first-degree murder in his wife’s death and was found guilty of manslaughter, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.Ontario’s highest court found the trial judge made an error when answering a question from the jury in that case and ordered a new trial on the manslaughter charge. That meant prosecutors could no longer argue that Grandine meant to kill his wife. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Friday’s France-Switzerland tilt represents a battle for first place in Group E, as both teams are tied with three points after winning their first matches. But though the winner will be in the driver’s seat for advancement, the stakes aren’t especially high for the loser either.Italy vs. Costa Rica: 12 p.m. EDTFrance vs. Switzerland: 3 p.m. EDTEcuador vs. Honduras: 6 p.m. EDTIn briefIN DEPTHAs things stand, France has a 91.8 percent chance of getting into the knockout stage of the tournament, and the Swiss check in at 80.9 percent. Ecuador and Honduras — who make up the rest of Group E and also face off Friday — lag far behind, at 20.3 and 7.1 percent, respectively.Honduras has a bleak outlook, mainly because they are the second-worst team in the World Cup field, according to ESPN’s Soccer Power Index (SPI). But Ecuador, according to SPI, is essentially Switzerland’s equal; the only difference in its advancement probabilities stems from Switzerland’s thrilling added-time victory over Ecuador on Sunday. For Ecuador, it was the one that got away; without that win, the model projects Ecuador to amass only 2.8 points within the group — they’re likely to beat Honduras but will be clear underdogs against France.Meanwhile, if Switzerland loses to France on Friday, the Swiss would still project to finish second in the group, because the meek Honduran squad is their only remaining hurdle. In fact, if the Swiss lose to France, Ecuador beats Honduras, and Switzerland only earns a draw against Honduras (an unlikely outcome), the Swiss would still be expected to advance over Ecuador by a slim margin — unless Ecuador beats France (or draws and posts a better goal differential than Switzerland). In other words, there are a lot of ways the Swiss can get out of Group E that don’t depend on them picking up points against France. The situation playing out in Group D, where Italy will face Costa Rica at noon Friday, is superficially similar. Like France and Switzerland, Costa Rica and Italy won their first matches of the tournament. Neither team’s odds of advancement are quite as high as its counterparts in Group E, though, mainly because there are no weak sides like Honduras to pick up easy points against. Costa Rica is the worst SPI team in the group, and it ranks 25th in the world.Whoever loses will have a fighting chance against Uruguay to qualify for the knockout round in the group’s second position. But that’s nowhere near as favorable a spot as the France-Switzerland loser will be sitting in after the day’s action ends.YesterdayLuis Suarez and Wayne Rooney prompted many questions before Thursday’s Group D showdown between Uruguay and England. Would Suarez, who missed Uruguay’s loss to Costa Rica in its World Cup opener because of knee surgery, be match-fit for 90 minutes in a must-win game? Could Rooney, whose performance against Italy brought his place in England’s lineup into question, break his career World Cup scoring drought? Those questions were answered in Sao Paulo.Suarez hadn’t played since May 11, but there was no evidence of rust. Of his four shots, two were on target — both goals. The latter goal, breaking a tie in the 85th minute, virtually ensured England’s second-consecutive loss in the tournament’s group stage, something England hadn’t experienced since 1950.Uruguay beat a European team at the World Cup for the first time in 16 matches since 1970, but don’t blame Rooney. He got off four shots, including two on goal and another that hit the post. Rooney found his World Cup breakthrough with a 75th-minute equalizer. The goal took him 10 World Cup matches — 758 minutes of play.England’s 78.1 pass completion percentage ranked in the bottom 35 percent of all teams in this World Cup, but it was easily the best in this game. Uruguay posted the worst completion percentage by a winning team in a World Cup win since at least the 1966 tournament (the start of ESPN Stats & Info’s data set). Uruguay’s 59.2 pass completion percentage against England was the only team performance in a game below 65 percent at this tournament.Other attacking and possession statistics favored England, including second-half touches in the attacking third (89 to Uruguay’s 57). The biggest stats, however, belonged to Suarez: two shots on target, two goals, 2-1 to Uruguay. — ESPN Stats & Info GroupOFF THE PITCHAs neighbors, France and Switzerland have a lot more in common than a World Cup match. Given their proximity, it makes sense that there would be population overlap. Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development data from 2009 shows that Switzerland has provided over twice the amount of nationals living in France than the other way around; there were 90,551 Swiss nationals living in France and 42,862 French nationals living in Switzerland. But given the population of each country, the French living in Switzerland make up five times the share of Swiss who made the opposite trek. There is one caveat to that data: Things have gotten icy between the two countries since it was compiled. In December 2012, France’s president, François Hollande, announced that wealthy French residents of Switzerland would have to pay French taxes and Swiss taxes, which one Swiss politician called a “declaration of war.” It’s unclear how this spat has affected migration between the countries, but it’s safe to say that the two nations are no longer as chummy as they once were. — Hayley MunguiaFURTHER READINGWe’re Telling England There’s a Chance!Defending World Cup Champions Keep Flaming OutCORRECTION (June 20, 10:05 a.m.): A previous version of the chart in this article showed the incorrect proportion of France’s projected 53 percent win. read more

The company has 25 employees currently, most of whom are engineers and scientists.“Our focus will be commercial development and applications that naturally come out of the foundational technologies we are developing,” Buttler said. Popular on Variety AI Foundation recently introduced the first phase of Reality Defender, software built to run alongside digital experiences (such as web browsing) to detect potentially fake media. Similar to antivirus software, it scans every image, video, and other media that a user encounters for known fakes, allows reporting of suspected fakes, and runs new media through various AI-driven analysis techniques to detect signs of alteration or artificial generation.Lars Buttler, who is AI Foundation’s CEO, previously co-founded and was CEO of Trion Worlds, a games company whose massively multiplayer online games include “Trove” and “Rift.” He said the dual nonprofit/commercial mission is central to the startup’s success.“Bringing personal AI to everyone opens up a new world of personal media, forever transforming entertainment and communications,” Buttler said.Explaining AI Foundation’s partnership with Endeavor, Buttler said the talent agency and media company represents “many great stars, people who move the world,” Buttler said. “They have a very high interest in AI and what it can do for the world as well as preventing some of the dangers.” He cited the issues that have cropped up with Deepfakes, an AI tool that allows the image of a celebrity to be be superimposed on pornography.Rob Meadows, the CTO of AI Foundation who previously founded AI-enabled software startup Originate, said the Reality Defender works today as a browser plug-in similar to ad blocker. The goal is to have the technology broadly adopted as a way to alert users when they encounter fake media on the web. With the funding, Founders Fund partner Cyan Banister and David Jones, founder of You & Mr Jones, have joined the AI Foundation’s board. In addition, Biz Stone has joined the startup’s Global AI Council advisory group, tasked with researching and evaluating how AI can “move humanity forward, as well as anticipate and counteract its risks.”“The potential to recognize the true promise of AI and to amplify the best traits of humanity are the driving values of The AI Foundation,” Stone said in a prepared statement. “The recognition and proactive approach to the possible negative impact of this technology is also reassuring.” Endeavor is among the investors in AI Foundation’s $10 million initial round of funding, fueling the artificial-intelligence startup’s development of AI tools including a system that scans for and detects fake media. It’s the first outside funding for San Francisco-based AI Foundation, founded in 2017. The round was led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund venture-capital firm and marketing-tech company You & Mr Jones, with participation by Endeavor and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Other investors in AI Foundation include movie producer Charles D. King, founder and CEO of production company Macro. The startup has an ambitious dual mission of creating both free artificial-intelligence tools to thwart the negative effects of AI as well as sell commercial products. The lofty goal of the AI Foundation: to “move humanity forward through the power of decentralized, trusted, personal AI, while anticipating and counteracting the risks of AI’s proliferation in society,” according to the company. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Credit: Dr. Wen Wang, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Mr. Zhe Si Citation: The Ruminant Genome Project reveals the secret lives of deer (2019, June 21) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2019-06-ruminant-genome-reveals-secret-deer.html Three teams of researchers working independently have conducted three specific studies of ruminants—a class of mammals that obtains nutrients from plants by fermenting it in chambered stomachs. The work was part of an overall project called, quite naturally, the Ruminant Genome Project. All three teams were made up of members from several institutions in China and a few other countries. All three groups have published their findings in the journal Science. Also, Dai Fei Elmer Ker and Yunzhi Peter Yang with the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Stanford University, respectively, have published a Perspective piece outlining the work by the three teams in the same journal issue. Domesticated ruminants such as sheep and cows are important to humans. Others are important because of their unique physical characteristics. Deer antlers, for example, grow exceptionally quickly, and reindeer live in the Arctic without freezing or suffering depression due to long winter nights. In this new effort, all three teams sought to learn more about particular aspects of these unique mammals. In the first study, the researchers assembled the genomes of 44 ruminants covering all six members of the Ruminantia families. They created a phylogenetic tree for the group, which helped to clear up some of the mysteries in the family history. It also showed that the group as a whole suffered severe declines in population coinciding with humans migrating out of Africa. The work by the second team involved studying ruminant headgear—horns, antlers, pronghorns and ossicones. They found that despite their physical differences, the bony headgear shared many similarities. They also found that the reason deer antlers regenerate so quickly is because they exploit cancer-associated signaling paths. The deer also have tumor-suppressing genes that prevent tumors from growing in their antlers—information that could be useful in cancer research. Credit: Dr. Wen Wang, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Mr. Zhe Si The third team focused most specifically on reindeer—they wanted to know how the deer manage to survive in such a cold, harsh environment, and why they do not succumb to depression during long, dark winters. To find out, they studied the reindeer genome and discovered that reindeer have unique genes related to metabolizing vitamin D and circadian arrhythmicity, and also for female antler growth. And their unique digestive system helps them survive on limited plant growth. © 2019 Science X Networklast_img read more

first_imgKolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today remembered mountaineer Chhanda Gayen, the first civilian woman from the state to summit Mt Everest, on her birth anniversary. Describing the mountaineer as “brave”, the chief minister said that her courage may become an inspiration for everybody. “Fondly remembering the brave mountaineer Chhanda Gayen on her birth anniversary. In her memory, the Bengal Government has instituted the Chhanda Gayen Bravery Award for successful mountaineers. May her courage inspire us all,” Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle this morning. Chhanda Gayen, who had scaled Mt Everest in 2013, went missing along with two sherpas in an avalanche while descending the western side of Mt Kanchenjunga, also known as Mt Yulan Kang, in Nepal in 2014. She was declared missing/dead after rescuers failed to spot her and the three accompanying sherpas. On her honour, the Mamata Banerjee government introduced the ‘Chhanda Gayen Bravery Award’ for women for their outstanding achievement in the field of adventure.last_img read more

large part to her refusal to indulge political strategist Karl Rove in his disbelief that President Obama was to be re-elected But in attempting to do something similar this election cyclespeaking frankly and directly to a powerful figure in the Republican partyshe found herself closer to the center of the story than she could have hoped Kelly even as she prepares to release a much-hyped book and as shes more central than ever to the culture of Fox News finds herself at an impasse: What does a figure whos positioned herself in opposition to the establishment do when a massive number of her potential viewers see her as the establishment Kellys vexed election season began with her question to Donald Trump about his treatment of women at the first Republican primary debate in 2015 It bore the hallmarks of a typical "Megyn moment" of the sort her fans love: tough-mindedness a sharp point-of-view and a transcendence within limits of GOP talking points And yet Trumps reactionfrom his dismissive non-response onstage to his campaign against Kelly on social mediaindicated that Kellys power over her audience had limits Kelly has said she received death threats and her relationship with fellow Fox News personality Bill OReilly was reportedly strained Fox News found itself at odds with the leading candidate of the party it had deep ties to Kellys perceived status as more open to liberal positions than her colleagues didnt not matter but it wasnt the point: In a year in which the status quo was forcefully repudiated a nightly anchor at a major media company however brash was a part of the apparatus Trump set out to dismantle The anchor and the candidate "made up" in kabuki fashion with Kelly hosting Trump on the first and only episode of Kellys newsmagazine show The broadcast an attempt for Kelly to broaden her aperture beyond granular daily political reporting was unsuccessful in its goalsboth Kellys goals of career advancement as her audience was surprisingly uninterested in seeing her in this format and in large part in making good TV I liked it more than most critics did both for a revealing moment in which Trump said he hurt others to "un-wound myself" and for its similarity to old Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer specials But that very similarity may be why she came to seem more tangential to the world of politics than shed been In the pursuit of Walters-like establishment megafame Kelly was content to get a sedate un-Trump-like Trump Yet Kelly grew yet more central to the world of Fox News in the wake of network founder Roger Ailess exit She was reported to have encouraged female colleagues to speak out about their experience with Ailes and as the anchor of the networks election-night coverage who was the face of the network the next morning on Kelly Ripas morning show shes never been more visible (On Ripa’s show which Kelly co-hosted today the news anchor addressed concerned detractors of Trump telling them the President “does not affect who you are”) If Kelly stays at Fox News shell have more potential impact on what that network reeling from the loss of Ailes is and can be than she would at another outlet But it seems unlikely that her impact would be what Fox Newss core constituency has an appetite for Kelly for all her own moments of absolutism (declaring Santa Claus unequivocally to be white to name one example) exists in a world of nuance Her appetite for playing devils advocate can be brooked by conservative voters in moments of defeat but it seems very off-tone in moments of triumph How would her aggressive exchange with Newt Gingrich in which she strongly defended her shows right and responsibility to cover allegations of sexual harassment against Trump play to Fox Newss traditional constituency of conservative viewers if it happened while Trump were president and Gingrich say a cabinet secretary Fox News which some might have assumed would treat the election of Trump as cause for celebration seemed as baffled and outmatched by the moment as hosts on every other network Trump has shown an un-Republican-like willingness to take the networks coverage onpushing back to un-wound himself far more than Fox had wounded him Unlike Obama hes not a natural scapegoat and unlike Bush hes not a natural ally Kellys work is more necessary than ever naturally and yet Kelly seems an odd fit for the moment Trump can’t change who she is but he can change her efficacy as a journalist seeking to reach an audience that powerfully repudiated facts this year She may have pushed the network incrementally but Trump radically redefined the alignment of his base and hers (Clinton voters may love Kelly but in the main theyre not the ones watching The Kelly File) Kelly is a journalist whose point-of-view matters more than ever But even as a media establishment that missed the story of the year toasts her continued success shes also a star without a constituency Contact us at year It’s available now for free (with optional in-game purchases) from Apple’s App Store The original Dots subtitled “a game about connecting” and released a little over a year ago was about lining up two or more same-colored circles at 90-degree angles The parameters were simple: you couldn’t do diagonals if you scored four-in-a-row all dots of the same color on the screen vanished you could use power-ups to remove certain dots or extend the clock and that clock lasted 60 seconds per round It was neat and pretty and pastel and in view of iOS 7’s clean-lined polychromatic vibe the kind of game you’d expect someone like Apple’s Jonathan Ive to design TwoDots which makes me think of that lyric in the Peter Gabriel song “Growing Up” where he’s singing his way through abstract levels of
