Challenge is well-known for games offering strong “virtual goods” elements.Zynga has built up its estimated $5 billion in worth and with 200 million users, largely on games like Farmville and Mafia Wars, popular on Facebook. But it has been going to town in an effort to extend its popular franchises. Challenge may provide it with a means of turbocharging its in-game economies. Recently, Zynga has announced a “five year strategic relationship” with Yahoo, which seeds Zynga’s games throughout Yahoo properties. It has also announced that it will stay with Facebook, despite plenty of rancor with the social media site on which it thrived, but which also kept taking bites out of the company’s profits. Virtual goods and virtual currency provide a major avenue for online gaming revenue. Challenge being folded into Zynga may help shore up that aspect of its business model. Staying on Facebook, Zynga must use that company’s “Facebook Credits.” Outside, there may be additional opportunities. Backed by Sequoia Capital and Globespan, the Austin-based Challenge Games launched in 2007 to focus on immersive, virtual goods Web games. The company has already been renamed Zynga Austin. Challenge CEO and Co-Founder, Andrew Busey, has been named general manager and vice president of the Austin studio and Zynga said its 35 employees will be retained.Zynga’s SEC filing indicates a “total offering amount” of $20,571,454.last_img read more

Story Highlights Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, says education and training are key to Jamaica’s attainment of sustainable growth. He argues that while the Government will “do all that is required” to spur greater economic growth, this will not be optimally realized “unless we (continue to) educate and train our people.”The Minister was delivering the keynote address at an awards ceremony hosted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Western Campus in Montego Bay on August 24.Noting that there was no substitute for a good education, Dr. Chang said he was encouraged by the growing number of students pursuing tertiary education. The Minister said he was particularly impressed that a significant number of students from communities deemed marginalized in North West St. James, for which he is the Member of Parliament, were embarking on this endeavor. He presented several of them with bursaries during the ceremony.Dr. Chang said the bursaries, funded through provisions from his Constituency Development Fund, were intended to assist students “who have done well and need some assistance to move on to tertiary institutions.”He said the assistance was extended because “I know how challenging it can be…because of economic (constraints and other factors) to get a college education.”Dr. Chang said he was convinced that if given the opportunities, “students from these communities can rise to the occasion and (play) their part in making (Jamaica) a better nation.”For his part, Jason Bowen, a native of St. James and past beneficiary of the bursary assistance programme, expressed gratitude for the intervention which he said helped him to complete his medical studies at the UWI.“I have to give thanks (because) I really don’t know what would have happened had I not gotten this level of assistance. A late surge was not enough for the No. 8 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team against Notre Dame Wednesday. The team lost for the second time this season, 9-4, against the No. 3-ranked Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind. After an early first period goal from sophomore attacker Reegan Comeault that tied the game, 1-1, the Buckeyes failed to find the back of the net again until the beginning of the fourth quarter. In the meantime, the Notre Dame scored five goals of its own to take a 6-1 lead into the fourth quarter. Despite an OSU comeback that saw three goals within six minutes, the Buckeyes could not dig themselves out of their hole, as the Fighting Irish scored a goal after each of OSU’s to end the game, 9-4. OSU was outshot by Notre Dame 42-27 on the day, an opponent season high. The Buckeyes’ four goals against the Fighting Irish marked a season low for the typically high-scoring offense. Before Wednesday, OSU hadn’t scored less than seven goals in a game since March 3, 2012, against Penn State, when the Buckeyes lost, 5-2. Senior attacker Logan Schuss added to his point streak of 52 games with an assist to sophomore midfielder Jesse King with five minutes remaining in the game. The road loss comes after OSU upset then-No. 9 Virginia, 11-10, on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. Junior midfielder Michael Italiano was named Eastern College Athletic Conference specialist of the week on Monday for his performance against the Cavaliers with eight ground balls. Italiano had five more against the Irish Wednesday. OSU split its string of four games against top-10 teams, 2-2, bringing the team’s overall record to 5-2. The Buckeyes are set to play against Bellarmine on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Louisville, Ky., before they return home to host the defending national champion, No. 6 Loyola Maryland, a week later. read more
