first_imgClose David Cameron secured a minor pre-general election victory and shocked Ed Miliband when he promised a future Tory government would not raise the rate of VAT.The promise came during the final Prime Ministers Questions of this Parliament and with just weeks to go before the vote in May.Ed Balls had promised a Labour government would not raise the 20% VAT rate, which is typically levied on goods and services, earlier in March. The shadow chancellor also attacked the Tories over the tax, claiming Cameron would raise the levy if he gained office after the general election.Ed Miliband sustained Labours attack on the issue at Prime Ministers Questions when he asked Cameron if he would rule out a VAT rise.On Monday the prime minister announced his retirement plans and he said it was because he believed in giving straight answers to straight questions, Miliband said, in reference to the revelation Cameron would only stay on for two terms. Now, after five years of Prime Ministers Questions, that was music to my ears. So heres a straight question: Will he not rule out a rise in VAT?Cameron replied: In 45 days time I plan to arrange his retirement. But hes right, straight questions do deserve straight answers. And the answer is yes.The pledge caused the Tory benches to erupt into cheers and the Conservative MPs began to heckle Miliband. But the Labour leader claimed nobody would believe Cameron over his VAT promise.Nobody is going to believe it because of his extreme spending plans, because his numbers dont add up and because he promised it last time and he broke his promise, Miliband said. The exchange comes after Chancellor George Osborne raised VAT from 17.5% in 2010 to its current rate as part of his emergency budget.Labour and the Tories are neck-and-neck in the opinion polls as the general election looms. The latest survey from YouGov, which questioned more than 2,000 voters between 23 and 24 March, put both of the parties on 35%, with Ukip on 12%, the Liberal Democrats on 8% and the Greens on 6%.last_img read more

first_imgThe global auto giant, General Motors, plans to invest $1 billion in India in the next few years to make the country its new global export hub, top executives of the company revealed.”GM cannot remain a global leader without making a serious investment towards expanding our presence in growth markets like India,” GM chief executive officer Mary Barra, told The Economic Times.GM’s India plans are a part of the company’s overall $5 billion investment earmarked towards the development of “a global family of Chevrolet vehicles” over the next few years, by partnering with Chinese automaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC).In the past few years, the domestic automobile market has been witnessing sales of less than three million cars annually due to slowing demand. However, India is projected to emerge as the world’s third-largest passenger vehicle market by 2020, next to China and the US.The company will roll out 10 new locally-manufactured vehicles in India over the next five years, as it plans to double its market share in the country by 2020, said Stefan Jacoby, GM’s chief of international operations.GM occupied a market share of 1.8 percent by the end of 2014, selling 56,700 vehicles in the country. With Japanese and Korean automakers having a significant presence in the Indian automobile market, Western companies like GM, Ford Motor Co and Volkswagen AG are facing difficulties to improve their sales.”With this investment, we plan to tap India’s potential as a market and as a low-cost manufacturing base for the future,” Jacoby told Reuters.By making India as its export hub, GM also likely wants to ease some pressure on its operations in South Korea. South Korea has been its export hub for long, accounting for one-fifth of the automaker’s global output.”However, the Indian expansion doesn’t herald a gradual move away from GM’s use of South Korea as an export base,” Jacoby said.last_img read more

first_imgLaunching a fresh attack against Twitter, Trump complained his followers kept fluctuating on the platform and he is losing them fast during the social media summit at the White House.IANSUS President Donald Trump lashed out at social networking platforms, especially Twitter, during the social media summit at the White House for censoring Republican views and blocking Americans from following him.As the summit was about to begin on Thursday, Twitter went down for nearly an hour. The outage was due to an “internal configuration change” that was fixed by the time the President started addressing the summit.Launching a fresh attack against Twitter, Trump complained his followers kept fluctuating on the platform and he is losing them fast, CBS News reported.”People come up to me, saying ‘Sir, we want to follow you; they don’t let us on’,” Trump told a gathering of conservatives and his far-right supporters.Interestingly, no representative from Twitter, Facebook or Google was invited to be part of the summit.”I have millions of people, so many people I wouldn’t believe it, but I know that we’ve been blocked. People come up to me and they say, ‘Sir, I can’t get you. I can’t follow you’,” he added.Twitter removed several fake accounts last year and in the process, Trump also lost nearly 3 lakh followers.”The President said he’s directing his administration to search for any regulatory or legislative action it can take to avoid censorship,” the report mentioned.Others present at the social media summit were Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican who favours stricter regulations for tech companies to avoid censorship.Senator Marsha Blackburn and Republican Matt Gaetz were also in attendance who have accused Twitter of censoring tweets.Right-wing provocateur James O’Keefe, the founder of Project Veritas, was also present. In his last meeting with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Trump reportedly questioned the former specifically on why he was losing followers the micro-blogging platform. The White House recently launched a new tool for people to report if they have been wrongly censored, banned or suspended on Facebook and Twitter. The tool comes in the wake of several Republicans slamming Facebook and Twitter for censoring conservative speech on both the platforms.Trump in a March tweet accused Facebook, Google and Twitter of being “on the side of the Radical Left Democrats”.last_img read more

Mueller report details Trump actions to impede inquiry

first_imgUS president Donald Trump. File photoSpecial counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his inquiry into Russia’s role in the 2016 US election described in extensive and sometimes unflattering detail how president Donald Trump tried to impede the probe, raising questions about whether he committed the crime of obstruction of justice. The release of the 448-page report on Thursday after a 22-month investigation marked a milestone in Trump’s tumultuous presidency and inflamed partisan passions ahead of his 2020 re-election bid.Democrats said the report contained disturbing evidence of wrongdoing by Trump that could fuel congressional investigations, but there was no immediate indication they would try to remove him from office through impeachment.Mueller built an extensive case indicating the Republican president had committed obstruction of justice but stopped short of concluding he had committed a crime, though he did not exonerate the president. Mueller noted that Congress has the power to address whether Trump violated the law.”The conclusion that Congress may apply the obstruction laws to the president’s corrupt exercise of the powers of office accords with our constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no person is above the law,” the report stated.Mueller also unearthed “numerous links” between the Russian government and Trump’s campaign and said the president’s team “expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts,” referring to hacked Democratic emails. But Mueller, a former FBI director, concluded there was not enough evidence to establish that Trump’s campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Moscow.Trump appeared to be in a celebratory mood, saying at a White House event with wounded US troops he was “having a good day” following the report’s release, adding, “It’s called no collusion, no obstruction.” Trump, whose legal team called the report “a total victory,” has long described Mueller’s inquiry as a “witch hunt.”Trump headed to his resort in Florida for the weekend, and on landing on Thursday night told a crowd of well wishers at the airport: “Game over folks, now it’s back to work.”The report, with some portions blacked out to protect sensitive information, provided fresh details of how Trump tried to force Mueller’s ouster, directed members of his administration to publicly vouch for his innocence and dangled a pardon to a former aide to try to prevent him from cooperating with the special counsel.”The President’s efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests,” the report stated. The report said that when former attorney general Jeff Sessions told Trump in May 2017 that the Justice Department was appointing a special counsel to look into allegations that his campaign colluded with Russia, Trump slumped back in his chair and said, “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I’m fucked.”Attorney general William Barr told a news conference Mueller had detailed “10 episodes involving the president and discusses potential legal theories for connecting these actions to elements of an obstruction offense.” Barr concluded last month after receiving a confidential copy of Mueller’s report that Trump had not actually committed a crime.Trump was wary of FBI scrutiny of his campaign and him personally, the report said. “The evidence does indicate that a thorough FBI investigation would uncover facts about the campaign and the president personally that the president could have understood to be crimes or that would give rise to personal and political concerns,” the report stated.Any impeachment effort would start in the Democratic-led House of Representatives, but Trump’s removal would require the support of the Republican-led Senate – an unlikely outcome. Many Democrats steered clear of impeachment talk on Thursday, although a prominent liberal congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, embraced the idea.”Many know I take no pleasure in discussions of impeachment. I didn’t campaign on it, & rarely discuss it unprompted,” she said on Twitter. “But the report squarely puts this on our doorstep.”The House, when it voted to impeach President Bill Clinton in 1998, included obstruction of justice as one of the charges. The Senate ultimately decided not to remove Clinton from office. The Democratic chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, said he would issue subpoenas to obtain the unredacted Mueller report and asked Mueller to testify before the panel by 23 May.Nadler told reporters in New York Mueller probably wrote the report with the intent of providing Congress a road map for future action, but the congressman said it was too early to talk about impeachment.”Mueller’s report paints a damning portrait of lies that appear to have materially impaired the investigation, a body of evidence of improper contacts with a foreign adversary, and serious allegations about how president Trump sought to obstruct a legitimate, and deeply important, counterintelligence investigation,” the Democratic chairs of six House committees said in a statement.Election MeddlingThe inquiry laid bare what the special counsel and US intelligence agencies have described as a Russian campaign of hacking and propaganda to sow discord in the United States, denigrate 2016 Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and boost Trump, the Kremlin’s preferred candidate. Russia has denied election interference. In analyzing whether Trump obstructed justice, Mueller looked at a series of actions by Trump, including his attempts to remove Mueller and limit the scope of his probe and efforts to prevent the public from knowing about a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in New York between senior campaign officials and Russians. In June 2017, Trump directed White House counsel Don McGahn to tell the Justice Department’s no. 2 official, Rod Rosenstein, that Mueller had conflicts of interest and must be removed, the report said. McGahn did not carry out the order. McGahn was home on a Saturday that month when Trump called him at least twice.”You gotta do this. You gotta call Rod,” McGahn recalled the president as saying, according to the report.House Judiciary Democrat Jamie Raskin pointed to Trump’s effort to get McGahn to fire Mueller and then lie about being told to do so as an area of interest for lawmakers, and said McGahn and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions could be valuable witnesses as the committee moves forward.”There are these dramatic episodes of presidential attempts to interfere with the Mueller investigation, and I think people would like to hear from a number of officials involved. White House counsel McGahn jumps out as an important witness,” he told Reuters. It also said there was “substantial evidence” Trump fired James Comey as FBI director in May 2017 due to his “unwillingness to publicly state that the president was not personally under investigation.” The FBI headed the inquiry at the time.Mueller cited “some evidence” suggesting Trump knew about former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s controversial calls with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Trump took office, but evidence was “inconclusive” and could not be used to establish intent to obstruct. The report said Trump directed former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski to ask Sessions to say the Russia investigation was “very unfair.”Barr, a Trump appointee, seemed to offer cover for Trump’s actions by saying the report acknowledges “there is substantial evidence to show that the president was frustrated and angered by a sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency, propelled by his political opponents, and fueled by illegal leaks.””President Trump faced an unprecedented situation. As he entered into office and sought to perform his responsibilities as president, federal agents and prosecutors were scrutinizing his conduct before and after taking office and the conduct of some of his associates,” Barr said.Mueller’s team did not issue a subpoena to force Trump to give an interview to the special counsel because it would have created a “substantial delay” at a late stage in the investigation, the report said. Trump refused an interview and eventually provided only written answers. The report said Mueller accepted the longstanding Justice Department view that a sitting president cannot be indicted on criminal charges, while still recognizing that a president can be criminally investigated. The report listed 14 criminal referrals for investigation by US prosecutors but 12 of those were fully blacked out because they are open investigations.Mueller said evidence he collected indicates Trump intended to encourage his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, not to cooperate and that the evidence supports the idea that Trump wanted Manafort to believe he could receive a presidential pardon. The report said the special counsel’s team determined there was a “reasonable argument” that the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., violated campaign finance laws, but did not believe they could obtain a conviction. The report cited Trump’s repeated efforts to convince Sessions to resume oversight of the probe after he had recused himself because of his own prior contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States.last_img read more

Minni faces police interrogation over Rifat murder

first_imgMinniPolice took Aysha Siddika Minni to the police superintendent’s office on Tuesday morning for interrogation over the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif in broad daylight, reports UNB.A team of police went to Minni’s residence near Barguna Police Lines around 9:45am and took her to the SP’s office, said witnesses. However, SP Maruf Hossain said police brought Minni to his office to take her deposition as a witness in the murder case.Md Humayun Kabir, inspector of Sadar police station and the investigation officer of the case, and the SP were taking her deposition under section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the sake of investigation, he said.Police also sought Minni’s cooperation to identify the murder suspects, according to the SP office. The new development came after Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif and locals demanded Minni’s arrest alleging that she had part to the gruesome murder of her husband. At a press conference at Barguna Press Club on Saturday night, Dulal Sharif demanded the arrest of his daughter-in-law to investigate whether she had colluded with the killers. He had alleged that Minni concealed the matter that she was previously married to Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, the prime accused of the Rifat murder case who was killed in an alleged gunfight with police on 2 July, and she used to visit Nayan’s house frequently.Besides, instead of trying to protect Rifat on the day, she was busy with herself and even ‘helped the killers’, according to Dulal. He raised a 10-point allegation against Minni who has been made the first witness in the case.Besides, locals formed a human chain on the Barguna Press Club premises on Sunday morning to press for the same demand. Many people, including Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif, took part in the human-chain programme.Soon after the human chain, Minni arranged a press conference at her father’s house where she claimed that propaganda was being spread against her to protect the murderers. “My father-in-law (Dulal Sharif) is sick and he has no balance.”She alleged that a vested group has been out to implicate her in the case through misguiding her father-in-law so that the accused get released.About the claim that she had previously married to Nayan Bond, Minni refuted it, saying, “Why hadn’t Nayan stood in my way when I married Rifat if I had earlier married him?”Police have so far arrested 13 people in connection with the Rifat murder. Seven of them have confessed to their involvement in the murder.A video clip of the murder captured in a surveillance camera went viral on social media. It showed criminals hacking Rifat Sharif brutally in broad daylight in front of Barguna Govt College while his wife Minni was trying to save him.Rifat was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal where he died.Dulal Sharif, the father of Rifat, filed a case against 12 people.last_img read more

Turkish diplomat among two shot dead in Iraq

Photo: AFPThe Turkish vice consul to Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region was among at least two people shot dead Wednesday in the regional capital Arbil, prompting pledges of “retaliation” from Ankara. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but Turkey is already waging a fierce offensive against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases in northern Iraq.On Wednesday afternoon, at least one gunman fired on Turkish consulate workers in a restaurant in Ainkawa, a northern Arbil neighbourhood that hosts numerous restaurants and the Turkish consulate.”A shooting in front of a restaurant in Arbil left a Turkish consulate employee and a civilian dead, and wounded a third person,” said the Kurdish internal security forces, known as the Asayish. The diplomat was identified by a local police source to AFP as the Turkish vice consul. The source said the attacker fled the scene.A spokesman for the Iraqi foreign ministry confirmed the incident and condemned the attack.Turkey’s foreign ministry said an “employee” at its Arbil consulate was killed in a shooting outside the consulate.”We are continuing our efforts with the Iraqi government and local authorities to find the perpetrators of this attack as quickly as possible,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His spokesman Ibrahim Kalin vowed “the necessary response will be given to those who committed this treacherous attack.”- ‘Heinous’ attack -The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which now leads the regional government, enjoys good political and trade relations with Turkey. But one sticking point is the PKK, which operates rear bases across Iraq’s mountainous north. The PKK is classified as a “terrorist” group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union because of the three-decade insurgency it has waged against the Turkish state.Turkey has been conducting a ground offensive and bombing campaign since May in the mountainous northern region to root out PKK pockets.Earlier this month, the PKK announced that one of those raids killed senior PKK leader Diyar Gharib Mohammed along with two other fighters.A spokesman for the PKK’s armed branch denied the group was involved in Wednesday’s shooting.According to Turkish state media, the attacker was dressed in plain clothes and carried two guns when he stormed the restaurant in Ainkawa, a bustling northern district of Arbil.Witnesses in the city said checkpoints had been quickly set up inside and around the neighbourhood. The US embassy slammed the attack as “heinous” and offered its condolences to the Turkish mission, calling for “the defence and safety of foreign diplomats and diplomatic missions in Iraq.”Several rocket attacks have targeted diplomatic missions in Iraq in recent months, including near the US and UK embassies in Baghdad’s “Green Zone.”The US in May ordered all non-essential personnel of its Baghdad embassy and Arbil consulate to leave the country. And in June, protesters gathered outside the Bahraini embassy in Baghdad.Authorities in Iraq, which is witnessing a period of relative calm since declaring victory against the Islamic State group in 2017, have pledged to protect embassies.last_img

Trump said the new office will help ensure such groups have “equal access” to government money and the “equal right to exercise their deeply held beliefs.”“We take this step because we know, that in solving the many, many problems and our great challenges, faith is more powerful than government and nothing is more powerful than God,” Trump said.Members of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, where more than two dozen worshippers were killed in a November 2017 shooting, attended the event. As Trump mingled with guests on his way back to the Oval Office, a reporter shouted to the president, “Why are you changing your story on Stormy Daniels?” Someone in the audience shouted back, “Shame on you!” Sharelast_img read more

Texas Receives 26 Million for Public Health Response to Opioid Epidemic

The website will allow access to more data and more quickly, down to county and ZIP code levels.“Having more information on where opioids are being used and their effects on communities will let state agencies and our partners in cities and counties focus their efforts where the needs are most pressing,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt.Additional funds will be used to train public health personnel at the community level on when and how to properly administer naloxone, a drug that can help prevent someone from dying from an opioid overdose, so they can then train first responders and others in their communities.DSHS also expects the grant will increase the number of doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners permitted to prescribe buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use in an office setting.Drug deaths in Texas and nationwide have been increasing and nearly half of all drug deaths in the state are attributed to opioids.last_img read more

US army to be powered by waste

first_img Citation: US army to be powered by waste (2009, October 12) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-10-army-powered.html British Town Demonstrates World’s First Garbage Truck Powered by Garbage The PyTEC system includes a pyrolysis tube capable of continuously consuming up to 100 kg (220 lb) of garbage an hour. Mixed waste is heated to high temperature in the pyrolisis tube, a process that releases combustible gases, which are then stored and later burned to generate electricity. The system produces five times more energy than is used to power the system. The pyrolisis process differs from other systems that generate energy by heating waste in that the heating takes place in the absence of oxygen. Aerobic systems generally need waste to be of only one type, whereas the pyrolisis system works with untreated mixed wastes. The thermal systems also need waste to be diced before being fed to the incinerator, and have problems with some components of waste, such as tin and glass. The PyTEC system does not require finely diced waste, and can handle the difficult waste sources with ease. The end products of the PyTEC system are energy and a glassy waste product that is only 5% of the volume of the original garbage. The system has been in use for a year on a British ship, the HMS Ocean. According to Qinetiq spokesperson Pat McGlead, the system has been “containerized” for the US army to make it easier to deploy. Up to ten systems will eventually be deployed, many of them in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they are expected to dramatically reduce the army’s use of fossil fuels, and take care of waste disposal at the same time. Until now the “forward operating bases” in Afghanistan and Iraq have had no formal arrangements for disposing of their waste. The PyTEC system may also find application outside the military, since many people in both commercial and private premises are seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint and produce energy from renewable sources. Turning waste into energy has many attractions for a wide range of people.A side benefit of the PyTEC waste disposal system in conflict areas may also be a saving of lives, since there will be less need for garbage trucks to be on the roads, where they risk land mines, and other forms of attack. The systems are expected to be delivered by mid 2010, and the period of testing and evaluation is expected to last until early 2012.© 2009 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — Defense company Qinetiq has been awarded a contract to supply the US army with a system that generates electricity from garbage.
