first_imgInfosys, India’s second largest IT firm, has been cleared of visa violations by the US government after a three-month probe, the company said on Tuesday.”Infosys is pleased to report that the US Department of Labour (DOL) concluded its investigation with a determination of compliance regarding labour condition applications filed in the Southern California Edison project. Infosys fully cooperated with the DOL in its investigation, and over 145 files were reviewed, with no violations found,” the company said.In June 2015, the US government had ordered an investigation to probe alleged violation of rules pertaining to H-1B visa by Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The probe was initiated after two US Senators alleged that the two companies misused an H-1B visa programme to “replace hundreds of American workers” at an electric utility, Southern California Edison. Prior to the investigation, Southern California Edison had laid off over 500 technology workers.”Many said they were made to train replacements who were immigrants on temporary visas, known as H-1B, brought in by the Indian firms, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys”, an NYT report said. But Infosys has denied indulging in unfair practices.”We do not practice or condone unfair or unethical H-1B visa practices. Our key priority is to operate fairly, ethically and with integrity, which is good business and what our clients expect,” said Sandeep Dadlani, EVP and Head of Americas of Infosys. In another similar instance, an American IT professional, who worked with TCS, had filed a lawsuit against the company in April, accusing the company of practising discrimination against Americans in its US offices and favouring South Asians in hiring and promotion.Indian IT companies are among the top recipients of H-1B visas issued by the US government. The visas allow companies to hire highly skilled workers from other countries when there is non-availability of such workers in the US.Responding to the development, the Infosys stock rose more than 1% on Tuesday morning to trade at Rs 1,070, while the benchmark Sensex climbed over 190 points.Analysts are bullish on the stock. “We maintain our BUY with a price target of INR 1306 and remain positive on the IT space,” said Sarabjit Kour Nangra, VP Research, IT & Pharma, Angel Broking.last_img read more

YouTube Rolls Out New Originals in Germany

first_img“Bullsprit,” a sitcom produced by Matthias Schweighöfer’s Pantaleon Films, the company behind Amazon’s “You Are Wanted,” follows three young friends who inherit a gas station. In “LeFloid vs. the World,” produced by Red Arrow Studios’ Berlin-based Studio71 Germany, local YouTube star LeFloid travels the globe addressing pressing issues facing millennials, such as climate change, global finance and artificial intelligence.YouTube has so far launched or is in the process of launching originals in South Korea, Mexico, the U.K., Japan, France and India.“We focus on markets that have great creative communities, with a history of filmmaking and publishing a lot of content, so there’s a lot of infrastructure and talent with desire to express themselves,” Kyncl said. “We’re starting with the pillar focusing on people who have become successful on YouTube. You see us directly leaning into that in Germany.”YouTube is currently charging €11.99 ($13.88) a month in Germany for its premium subscription offering.Kyncl added, however, that YouTube wasn’t putting its stars behind paywalls since many continue to produce their regular content in addition to working on YouTube originals. “On average, when creators do YouTube originals, their channels grow by about 20%,” he said. With regard to acquisitions, Kyncl said that while they may not be based on talent that has become successful on YouTube, they nevertheless revolved around “topics or areas that are of interest” to YouTube users. With “Cobra Kai,” for example, success was anticipated based on the great interest in “The Karate Kid”-related content on YouTube, Kyncl noted. “Clearly there was demand for it. We can see what people are interested in.”Despite feature film acquisitions such as “Museo,” Kyncl said the company was leaning more towards documentaries. “They seem to work really, really well on YouTube. We’re having a lot of success with documentaries.” YouTube unveiled its first German shows, including two comedy formats, on Wednesday as part of the platform’s continued international rollout of original content for its paid subscription offering. In Berlin for the launch of the three formats, YouTube Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl told Variety that the new shows were in line with the company’s global three-pronged approach. The strategy includes working with YouTube stars who have amassed large followings and “have creative ambitions beyond their means”; music documentaries and shows; and tentpoles, such as the hit “Karate Kid” spin-off “Cobra Kai” – so far YouTube’s most popular original series in Germany – and film acquisitions like Alonso Ruizpalacios’ “Museo,” starring Gael García Bernal. The company’s new German formats include “Neuland,” a meta-comedy produced by Cologne-based Brainpool, featuring local YouTube personality Phil Laude as a former online star trying to make a comeback while fending off David Hasselhoff, who appears as himself. Some of the documents reveal that Facebook employees were even aware that children were spending large amounts of money without parental awareness, according to Reveal, the news agency of The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR).“A glimpse into the soon-to-be-released records shows Facebook’s own employees worried they were bamboozling children who racked up hundreds, and sometimes even thousands, of dollars in game charges,” a post from Reveal stated. “And the company failed to provide an effective way for unsuspecting parents to dispute the massive charges, according to internal Facebook records.” In another glimpse of one of the to-be unsealed documents from the case, a Facebook employee refers to a minor spending money in the game as a “whale.” The term “whale” is used in the industry to refer to big spenders in games, often in mobile or casual games. The following excerpt is allegedly from one of the unsealed documents as spotted by Reveal:Gillian: Would you refund this whale ticket? User is disputing ALL charges…Michael: What’s the users total lifetime spend?Gillian: It’s $6,545 – but card was just added on Sept. 2. They are disputing all of it I believe. That user looks underage as well. Well, maybe not under 13.Michael: Is the user writing in a parent, or is this user a 13ish year oldGillian: It’s a 13ish yr old. says its 15. looks a bit younger. she* not its. Lol.Michael: … I wouldn’t refundGillian: Oh that’s fine. cool. agreed. just double checkingAs of 2012, “Facebook’s refund policies for individuals between 13 and 17 were the same as its policies for adults, but … policies for minors under 13 were different,” according to the court document. This could explain why the employees were speculating over the user’s age.Regardless, that Facebook employees would refer to a minor as a “whale” implies intention behind purchases, which brings it back to the issue of whether a parent should be held responsible when a child, even unknowingly, makes massive purchases with their credit card. The eight documents, which Facebook requested remain sealed, fall into the categories of “refund policies… fraud detection practices… and …  sensitive business and financial information.”The court sided with Facebook for several exhibits, largely under grounds that information within was sensitive business information that would put the company at a competitive disadvantage (that’s where the “denied in part” ruling comes from). The court disagreed with some key information, such as Facebook’s request to seal a document which contains ” dollar values related to transactions, refunds, and chargebacks involving minors between 2008 and 2014″ on the grounds that this information is not going to harm Facebook’s business interests and is “of great public interest.”View this document on Scribd For example, one internal memo stated that “In nearly all cases the parents knew their child was playing ‘Angry Birds’, but didn’t think the child would be allowed to buy anything without their password or authorization first,” according to Reveal. The 2012 case came after plaintiff Glynnis Bohannon contended that her child asked to spend $20 on Facebook Credits, an in-game currency, to use on “Ninja Saga.” Bohannon agreed and used her credit card, but her child was able to continue spending money without her permission beyond the $20, ultimately reaching “several hundred dollars,” according to the court document.Bohannon attempted to get a refund from Facebook, but was denied until she filed against Facebook.Another plaintiff, Steven Wright, had a similar experience with his son and had over $1,000 of disputed charges. In the case of Wright, his son had not asked for initial permission, and he was granted only a partial refund of $59.90 with an additional $999.30 in charges remaining unrefunded, though a Facebook representative said it had “refunded the charges to [Mr. Wright’s] funding instrument,” according to the court document.Complaints in the lawsuit Bohannon v. Facebook contended that “under its policies, Facebook ‘routinely refuses requests by children and their parents and legal guardians to provide refunds for transactions that are subject to disaffirmance under California law.’”Ultimately, the case was settled, and the plaintiffs received refunds. Following the conclusion of the lawsuit, the CIR requested documents related to the Bohannon v. Facebook case be released in full, a request that was ultimately “granted in part and denied in part.”In response to Variety‘s request for comment, a Facebook spokesperson offered the following statement:“We were contacted by the Center for Investigative Reporting last year, and we voluntarily unsealed documents related to a 2012 case about our refund policies for in-app purchases that parents believe were made in error by their minor children. We intend to release additional documents as instructed by the court. Facebook works with parents and experts to offer tools for families navigating Facebook and the web. As part of that work, we routinely examine our own practices, and in 2016 agreed to update our terms and provide dedicated resources for refund requests related to purchased made by minors on Facebook.“ Popular on Variety ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. US army to be powered by waste

first_img Citation: US army to be powered by waste (2009, October 12) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-10-army-powered.html British Town Demonstrates World’s First Garbage Truck Powered by Garbage The PyTEC system includes a pyrolysis tube capable of continuously consuming up to 100 kg (220 lb) of garbage an hour. Mixed waste is heated to high temperature in the pyrolisis tube, a process that releases combustible gases, which are then stored and later burned to generate electricity. The system produces five times more energy than is used to power the system. The pyrolisis process differs from other systems that generate energy by heating waste in that the heating takes place in the absence of oxygen. Aerobic systems generally need waste to be of only one type, whereas the pyrolisis system works with untreated mixed wastes. The thermal systems also need waste to be diced before being fed to the incinerator, and have problems with some components of waste, such as tin and glass. The PyTEC system does not require finely diced waste, and can handle the difficult waste sources with ease. The end products of the PyTEC system are energy and a glassy waste product that is only 5% of the volume of the original garbage. The system has been in use for a year on a British ship, the HMS Ocean. According to Qinetiq spokesperson Pat McGlead, the system has been “containerized” for the US army to make it easier to deploy. Up to ten systems will eventually be deployed, many of them in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they are expected to dramatically reduce the army’s use of fossil fuels, and take care of waste disposal at the same time. Until now the “forward operating bases” in Afghanistan and Iraq have had no formal arrangements for disposing of their waste. The PyTEC system may also find application outside the military, since many people in both commercial and private premises are seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint and produce energy from renewable sources. Turning waste into energy has many attractions for a wide range of people.A side benefit of the PyTEC waste disposal system in conflict areas may also be a saving of lives, since there will be less need for garbage trucks to be on the roads, where they risk land mines, and other forms of attack. The systems are expected to be delivered by mid 2010, and the period of testing and evaluation is expected to last until early 2012.© 2009 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — Defense company Qinetiq has been awarded a contract to supply the US army with a system that generates electricity from garbage. A possible explanation for why pygmy people in the jungle are so

first_img Modern Flores Island pygmies show no genetic link to extinct ‘hobbits’ © 2018 Science X Network Explore further Journal information: Proceedings of the Royal Society B Scientists have long been stumped by the short stature of pygmy people. Most pygmy people have developed shorter stature while living in a tropical region, such as in Malaysia or the Amazon jungle. But what about living in the jungle causes nature to select for shorter stature? Some have suggested a smaller body dissipates heat better, or can better deal with high humidity levels. But the truth is that no one knows the real reason. In this new effort, the researchers set out to find the answer. They first came up with a hypothesis, and then carried out some experiments to test their ideas. The hypothesis was that it is easier for shorter people to walk around in the dense jungle—taller people with longer strides find it more difficult to get around in dense jungle forests. To test this idea, the researchers built models meant to mimic the behavior of people of different sizes making their way through a jungle. They then compared what they found with real human beings—watching and recording as both taller people and pygmy people made their way through the jungles of the Batek of Peninsular Malaysia and the Tsimane in Bolivia. The researchers report that both their models and their observations of people walking in jungle environments agreed with their hypothesis—the shorter pygmy people were far better at making their way through the jungle, and it appeared that shorter step length was the reason. The shorter steps allowed the Pygmy people to move much more quickly through the dense underbrush, making foraging much more efficient. The researchers suggest their results offer the first evidence of the shorter stature of the Pygmy people being a phenotype with adaptive benefits. A team of researchers from the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, Harvard University, the University of Exeter and the University of California has come up with a new theory to explain the short stature of pygmies living in the jungle. In their paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the group suggests that shorter steps taken by shorter people are an evolutionary advantage in the jungle.center_img Credit: CC0 Public Domain More information: Vivek V. Since then sleuths were looking for him. Four days ago, sleuths nabbed two more persons identified as Kalipada Mondal and Nirmal Ghosh. After interrogating the four arrested persons, sleuths came to know that Pundari had attacked Biswas before during the Kali Puja over some disputes. He was eventually resisted by local residents at that time. During investigation, it was suspected that he might try to flee to Bangladesh as the Indo-Bangla border is close to the area. Thus, police sought help from the Border Security Force to step up vigil on the border. Pundari’s picture was also provided to them. On Sunday night, sleuths got a tip-off that Pundari was hiding somewhere in West Midnapore. As Pundari was aware that he could be traced by his mobile’s location, he left it at his home in Nadia. During search operations at several places, sleuths were informed on Sunday that Pundari was hiding at Radhamohanpur in West Midnapore.
