Rabat – Morocco’s public health officials and the Ministry of Health have found common ground on raising Moroccan doctors’ working standards, easing tensions in a sector that threatened to go on strike by mid-January. In a recent joint press release, the Independent Union of Public Sector Doctors (SIMSP) and the Ministry of Health announced that authorities “have taken into account the majority of doctors’ demands” and are setting a mechanism to ensure that the agreement is implemented.Like their counterparts in the Moroccan public sector, doctors at public health institutions are demanding improved working conditions, especially wage raises, leave, and retirement. The press statement emphasized the two parties “commitment to restore trust and restart the social dialogue” to improve both health practitioners’ working conditions and the quality of treatment at Moroccan public hospitals.Government representatives and doctors’ union representatives reached the agreement at a meeting in Rabat on December 24, after months of disagreements that unions attributed to the government’s refusal to cooperate.Read Also: Moroccan Doctors Wear Black to Protest Healthcare ConditionsThe agreement also mentioned the need to revive the country’s ineffective medical assistance system to make the country’s healthcare more inclusive. While satisfied with the terms of the agreement, healthcare professionals are not yet celebrating. They said they are waiting until the government translates into “concrete action” the principles of the joint press statement.SIMSP President Abdellah El Montadar Alaoui said: “This agreement in principle is a positive step for public sector doctors. Now we are waiting for implementation.” Alaoui added, “The ministry has taken our concerns into account. Now it is up to the government to act.”Key among doctors’ demands is a considerable revision of their salary scale. Currently paid at a scale of 336 (the equivalent of other government employees with master’s degree), doctors are requesting that the scale be upgraded to 509 (equivalent to government employees with a doctorate, or “Bac +8” in the Moroccan system) which they say is more reflective of the length of medical school. The agreement comes as other professional sectors threaten to hit the country with “a month of anger” of protests and marches from early to mid-January. Teachers’ unions announced late last month that they will march tomorrow, January 3. As no announcement has yet been issued to the contrary, the march is expected to proceed tomorrow from Parliament to the Ministry of Education. read more

16 June 2007The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) marked the Day of the African Child today by calling on governments, communities and families to boost efforts to prevent child trafficking. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) marked the Day of the African Child today by calling on governments, communities and families to boost efforts to prevent child trafficking. “Globally, an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, within countries as well as across borders,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman. “Children are trafficked into prostitution, into armed groups to serve as child soldiers, to provide cheap or unpaid labour, and to work as house servants or beggars.” Trafficking exposes children to violence, sexual abuse, severe neglect, and HIV infection, she pointed out, while violating children’s right to be protected, to grow up in a family environment and to have access to education. UNICEF called for punishing the perpetrators of human trafficking, which generates an estimated $9.5 billion a year and fuels other criminal activities. Concerted action is also needed to tackle the social and economic factors behind this crime, which has its roots in poverty, UNICEF said. Children are frequently lured with promises of good jobs in other countries or in cities in their own countries. In reality they are “traded like commodities” to work in brutal conditions and many children face beatings and other forms of physical and sexual abuse from their employers. Also marking the Day, Radhika Coomaraswamy, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, recalled meeting a 13-year old Congolese girl who was abducted on her way to school, gang raped, subject to forced nudity, and used as a sexual slave by a dissident armed group in Eastern Congo for more then two years. The victim, who became pregnant during her ordeal, is now receiving schooling while her baby receives childcare. But Ms. Coomaraswamy said the girl has no response when asked about her future. “Her silent answer and her whole story is the most heartbreaking one that I have ever heard,” said the Special Representative. Citing another example of the trauma endured by African children in conflict, the Special Representative described the ordeal of a former child soldier in Sierra Leone who left his community because he felt “haunted by bad spirits” and was re-recruited to fight for rebels in Liberia before working as a mercenary in Côte d’Ivoire. He said he left Sierra Leone because there is peace there now, explaining: “What I really know how to do well is fight and be a soldier.” Ms. Coomaraswamy pointed out that courts are now trying Charles Taylor, the former President of Liberia, and Congolese fighter Thomas Lubana. The battle against impunity, she said, is the key to end grave violations against children. “Children deserve protection. Violations of children’s rights must stop, impunity must end,” she said. The Day of the African Child is celebrated on 16 June in recognition of the day when, in 1976, thousands of Black schoolchildren had marched in the streets of Soweto to claim their right to a better education, sparking a two-week revolt in which more than 100 people were killed and thousands were wounded. read more

by News Staff Posted May 23, 2012 4:33 pm MDT Couples therapy? Newlywed Liberals and NDP fighting over stalled budget bill TORONTO – The honeymoon is officially over. The so-called “happy marriage” of convenience between Ontario’s minority Liberals and the New Democrats over the budget hit another rough patch Wednesday, with the Liberals accusing the NDP of breaking their wedding vows.Finance Minister Dwight Duncan accused the NDP and the Progressive Conservatives of “using every stall tactic in the book” to block the budget, jeopardizing both Ontario’s credit rating and a plan to slay the province’s $15-billion deficit. The NDP helped the Liberals survive a crucial budget vote a month ago after brokering a deal that included several of their demands, including hiking taxes on the wealthy. The New Democrats say they only agreed to let the budget clear its first hurdle, by abstaining from a vote on the budget motion. But Duncan insists the NDP also agreed to allow the entire 357-page budget bill to pass.“When is a deal not a deal?” Duncan asked. “I watch the media and I was privy to those discussions. That’s what we agreed to.”The government made a billion dollars’ worth of changes to garner the NDP’s support “and what they’re doing now is simply playing games,” Duncan added. The delay tactics include forcing 30-minute division bells to ring as often as possible, which has been holding up the budget debate for more than a month, he said. But it’s the Progressive Conservatives who are ringing the bells to protest the government’s refusal to strike a special committee on Ornge, the province’s troubled air ambulance service that’s currently under a criminal probe. With just eight sitting days left until the legislature rises, the government is prepared to extend debates until midnight and even over the summer to move the budget forward, Duncan said. But New Democrats say they’re not holding anything up and have made it clear to the government that they’ll fast-track measures that they wanted in the budget.“We negotiated with the government and our agreement was very clear,” said NDP house leader Gilles Bisson. “We’re not trying to squeeze them.”But there are elements in the huge budget bill that require public scrutiny, such as selling off government services like ServiceOntario that could lead to more Ornge-type scandals down the road, he said.Bisson said his party won’t support any motions to limit debate of the budget bill, but they are prepared to sit in the summer.“I think there is a deal to be had there and it’s not going to be excessive to the government,” he said. “We’re not going to get everything we want, they’re not going to get everything they want, but we should be able get to this by the end of June.”The Liberals are acting like bullies, said Progressive Conservative finance critic Peter Shurman.“The Liberals spent eight years with a significant majority and did whatever they pleased, and now they can’t do whatever they please and they’re acting like whiners,” he said.“I think the population of Ontario are sick and tired of hearing this constant whining about what we or the NDP are doing. I think it’s time they looked into the mirror and decided that they have to change tactics.”Duncan warned that if the budget doesn’t pass before the legislature breaks for the summer, key measures won’t be implemented in time, including a corporate tax cut that’s supposed to kick in July 1 and the NDP’s surtax on the rich.“The longer into this fiscal year you go, the more challenging implementation becomes,” he said.Duncan also raised the spectre of a possible downgrade by a second credit rating agency if the March budget is defeated and the province is plunged into another election.“They want the parties of this minority legislature to work together, put in place a strong plan to balance the budget and hit the fiscal targets that we have laid out,” he said.Moody’s Investors Service downgraded the province’s debt rating on April 26, citing Ontario’s growing debt burden and the need to stay on track to eliminate the deficit in 2017.A few days before Moody’s dropped its bombshell, Standard and Poor’s also revised its outlook on the province’s debt rating from “stable” to “negative.” read more

Freshman forward Nichelle Prince (7) looks for a shot during a match against Indiana Sept. 26 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU won, 3-1.Credit: Ryan Robey / For The LanternAfter tallying just two goals in its last two games, the Ohio State women’s soccer team netted two goals in the first 18 minutes en route to a 3-1 win over Indiana. The Hoosiers surrendered all three scores before halftime Thursday, allowing one more goal than they had in all of their previous matches of the season combined.“It says a lot about how hard our forwards have worked to get to that point,” Buckeye junior forward Kayla Varner said. “We’ve been working hard, going into practice early, getting shots off. It felt rewarding, I was happy about it.”Varner opened the scoring for the Buckeyes in the fourth minute, scoring on a cross from senior midfielder Danica Wu.“Danica had an awesome cross, and I just happened to be there and finish it,” Varner said.Wu would also be in on OSU’s second goal, getting a ball through to sophomore forward Michela Paradiso, who found the back of the net in the 18th minute to give the Buckeyes the 2-0 advantage.“I’m proud of the way that we got in, and the variety that we are creating in our attack,” coach Lori Walker said. “I thought that worked out pretty well for us.”With just five minutes left in the half, the Buckeyes struck again. Freshman defender Taylor Schissler found fellow freshman midfielder Alexis Degler on a long ball, finishing from short range to put the Buckeyes up 3-0.“In the first half, we played really solid. We only had five shots and scored three goals, so we were efficient in what we did,” Walker said.Degler’s goal marked the second time this season three different Buckeyes scored in a single game.“The most important thing is that we had three different people getting on the board tonight. I think it’s good after losing (graduated forward) Tiffany Cameron … she carried a lot of our goals last year,” senior goalkeeper Rachel Middleman said. “It’s awesome that we got some people up on the board tonight.”Indiana would not get on the board until the 66th minute, getting a scoring strike from junior midfielder Abby Smith to get the previously unbeaten Hoosiers on the board. Ohio State outshot the Hoosiers 7-6 in the second half, but the Buckeyes were not happy with their performance.“I’m proud of us that we won, I’m proud of us in the first half, but the second half does not represent the kind of soccer that we want to play,” Walker said. The Buckeyes (7-1-2) are scheduled to host Purdue Sunday at the Bert L. & Iris S. first_imgMaelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS) is seeing an unprecedented growth in the sales of its portable laboratory flotation cell aptly named Traveller Cell. The cell offers all of the advantages associated with much larger conventional laboratory machines and can be used for standard laboratory testwork. Indeed many sales have been solely for this purpose. However importantly, the major added advantage of the Traveller cell is that it is portable due to its small size and weight fitting neatly into a supplied carry case. It can therefore be used in offsite plant applications or other remote wherever the flotation testwork is required, MMS says.MMS’s Operations Manager Mark Battersby comments “I always take a Traveller Cell with me when travelling overseas for plant audits. The total weight of the unit is less than 20 kg and can go as standard airline baggage when in its carry case. It can be assembled and disassembled on site within a couple of minutes.”last_img read more

first_imgTHE PARENTS OF a seven-year-old autistic boy were left “gobsmacked” last weekend when a used syringe, lodged down the side of the seat on a DART, became stuck in his finger. The family were on their way to catch the Christmas steam train from Pearse Street Station in Dublin on Saturday when the boy put his hand down the side of his seat. When he pulled it back out, there was a syringe stuck in his finger, his father told“He had to get a series of tests in Crumlin Hospital because we don’t know what was in it but there was blood in the syringe,” he said. “We won’t know now for six months what the situation is but he’s on a course of injections against hepatitis B and hepatitis C.”‘Like being stabbed’The concerned father said that while he and his wife were “just devastated” when they saw the syringe hanging from their son’s hand, it gave the seven-year-old himself a major scare.“The slightest little thing feels like a mountain for him – a pin prick to an autistic child is like being stabbed,” he explained. He said his son does not “understand the repercussions it could have” and though doctors have said the liklihood of his having hepatitis is low, “no one knows what the outcome of it will be”.The boy’s parents notified staff at Iarnróid Éireann as soon as it happened last Saturday and wrote to the company this week. His father said they will also be seeking legal advice on the matter.Reviewing CCTVIn a statement to, a spokesperson for Irish Rail said it was obviously a very distressing incident for the young boy and his family and the company has been liaising with them since the incident. We are reviewing CCTV both in terms of the incident itself, and to see if it can be identified when and by whom the needle was placed there. It does appear as if it was down the side of the seat completely out of sight. They said there was an immediate check after the incident happened to ensure there was no other potentially harmful material hidden or visible on the train and “thankfully there was not”.“DARTs are cleaned thoroughly and regularly, including sides of seats to ensure that such incidents are prevented, so it may have been that the syringe was placed there earlier in the day while the train was in service,” they added.Read: Man injects himself in the groin on the Luas>Read: Irish Rail apologises after passengers have to stand in carriage aislesRead: Bus Éireann passengers terrorised by ‘rowdy’ youths throwing urine around coach>last_img read more

first_imgSpoilers for Iron Man 3 below.Rebecca Hall had a sizeable role in Iron Man 3, playing a doctor who had a one-night stand with Tony Stark and then comes back following a terrorist threat that used the Extremis concoction to make super soldiers. So, didn’t it seem weird that she just gets shot out of nowhere and dies?According to an interview with the actress in the Toronto Sun, there’s a reason for that: she had a more substantial role in earlier versions of the script. She was actually supposed to be the villain at one point. In a May interview with Uproxx, Shane Black, director of Iron Man 3, first announced that in an early draft, Hall’s character, Dr. Maya Hansen, had a much larger role. In fact, she was the villain. If those who’ve seen the film remember, it turns out to be Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian who was the brains behind the Extremis project and the Mandarin threats. At first, this was Hansen, but it was changed due to fears that a female Killian toy wouldn’t sell.“We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand and we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female,” he said.It seems as if Hall has now confirmed this fact, saying that she’s been dying to talk to somebody about it.“I’ve been gagging to talk about it with someone, but I haven’t had the opportunity, weirdly,” she told reporters.“I signed on to do something that was a substantial role. She wasn’t entirely the villain – there have been several phases of this – but I signed on to do something very different to what I ended up doing.”I contend that Iron Man 3 is the best of the three Iron Man films in the Marvel canon. There are stakes involved, Tony starts going through the trauma of post-New York that’ll haunt him in the coming films, and the Mandarin was a well-done twist–a commentary on the state of terror in the 21st century and the media circus that followed that news.I’m glad that at least that Shane Black-style twist made it into the film, but disappointed that Marvel, once again, put the priorities of hypothetical sales over storytelling. Having Hall as the villain would’ve pushed the superhero genre, something that has suffered in recent years is a lack of diversity.Yes, we’re going to finally get a Captain Marvel film starring Brie Larson and a female villain with Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, but that’s been after nearly a decade of Marvel being too hesitant to take risks.Plus, there’s no evidence that states that a female version of a toy would sell less. I’m sure people weren’t rushing out to buy their kids Guy Pearce Killian action figures. This isn’t the first time that Marvel has come under fire for a lack of representation in its merchandise. Despite Black Widow jumping out of a plane on a motorcycle in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, that version of the toy was replaced with characters that weren’t even in the scene. The same controversy occurred with Hasbro following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Despite Rey being the main character in the film, there was a surprising lack of toys in her image. The company claimed that it didn’t want to spoil any of the story, but Rey being a major character wasn’t exactly a secret. Both controversies had similar issues. In Pajiba articles, both Black Widow and Rey toys were dismissed because, according to insider sources, the companies didn’t want to market to girls and were afraid boys wouldn’t buy female action figures.“We know what sells. No boy wants to be given a product with a female character on it,” said one of the sources. And of course, once Hasbro started putting more Rey toys on the shelves, and the only thing it suffered from was not enough supply for the demand. It’s too late to go back now obviously, but Marvel can learn from these situations in the future. There is nothing wrong with female action figures, and especially nothing wrong with women wanting to be the bad guy.“Look, (Marvel) is paying for their mistakes right now,” Hall added, “and I applaud them for casting Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. Hallelujah. It’s about time women started being the heroes of things.”last_img read more
