first_imgRishabh PantDelhi Capitals TwitterWicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been confirmed as the replacement for Shikhar Dhawan after the latter was ruled out of the entire ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, in England due to a thumb injury. The prolific opener suffered the injury after being hit by a Pat Cummins delivery during his 109-ball 117 knock against Australia. While the X-ray didn’t show any fracture, CT scan revealed otherwise and Dhawan was taken to a specialist for further assessment. He was given time to recover but according to sources he needed two weeks to recover, leading to his omission from the squad for the rest of the tournament. It will be a huge loss for the Virat Kohli-led side as the southpaw is a very important part of the team and was in form. The 21-year-old, wicket-keeper batsman Pant, who plays for Delhi Capitals, was not included in the 15-member squad for the World Cup. Experienced campaigner Dinesh Kartik was selected instead of him which triggered mixed reactions from experts and fans. He had scored 488 runs in 16 matches of the IPL including three half-centuries. But the team management felt he is not ready for the World Cup. His performance for India is not that good though, he has played five ODIs scoring 93 runs at an average of 23.25. Considering his form in the IPL former cricketers around the world stated that the selectors played it ‘safe’ by choosing Kartik.Rishabh Pant is already with the team as cover for Dhawan. He reached Manchester and joined the Indian team ahead of the clash against Pakistan. India are currently placed fourth in the table and will next face Afghanistan on Saturday, June 22. The Delhi Capitals batsman might get a call up in that match considering India having a much better chance of winning against the minnows who are yet to win a game in the tournament.last_img read more

first_imgMinniPolice took Aysha Siddika Minni to the police superintendent’s office on Tuesday morning for interrogation over the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif in broad daylight, reports UNB.A team of police went to Minni’s residence near Barguna Police Lines around 9:45am and took her to the SP’s office, said witnesses. However, SP Maruf Hossain said police brought Minni to his office to take her deposition as a witness in the murder case.Md Humayun Kabir, inspector of Sadar police station and the investigation officer of the case, and the SP were taking her deposition under section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the sake of investigation, he said.Police also sought Minni’s cooperation to identify the murder suspects, according to the SP office. The new development came after Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif and locals demanded Minni’s arrest alleging that she had part to the gruesome murder of her husband. At a press conference at Barguna Press Club on Saturday night, Dulal Sharif demanded the arrest of his daughter-in-law to investigate whether she had colluded with the killers. He had alleged that Minni concealed the matter that she was previously married to Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, the prime accused of the Rifat murder case who was killed in an alleged gunfight with police on 2 July, and she used to visit Nayan’s house frequently.Besides, instead of trying to protect Rifat on the day, she was busy with herself and even ‘helped the killers’, according to Dulal. He raised a 10-point allegation against Minni who has been made the first witness in the case.Besides, locals formed a human chain on the Barguna Press Club premises on Sunday morning to press for the same demand. Many people, including Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif, took part in the human-chain programme.Soon after the human chain, Minni arranged a press conference at her father’s house where she claimed that propaganda was being spread against her to protect the murderers. “My father-in-law (Dulal Sharif) is sick and he has no balance.”She alleged that a vested group has been out to implicate her in the case through misguiding her father-in-law so that the accused get released.About the claim that she had previously married to Nayan Bond, Minni refuted it, saying, “Why hadn’t Nayan stood in my way when I married Rifat if I had earlier married him?”Police have so far arrested 13 people in connection with the Rifat murder. Seven of them have confessed to their involvement in the murder.A video clip of the murder captured in a surveillance camera went viral on social media. It showed criminals hacking Rifat Sharif brutally in broad daylight in front of Barguna Govt College while his wife Minni was trying to save him.Rifat was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal where he died.Dulal Sharif, the father of Rifat, filed a case against 12 people.last_img read more

Photo: AFPThe Turkish vice consul to Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region was among at least two people shot dead Wednesday in the regional capital Arbil, prompting pledges of “retaliation” from Ankara. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but Turkey is already waging a fierce offensive against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases in northern Iraq.On Wednesday afternoon, at least one gunman fired on Turkish consulate workers in a restaurant in Ainkawa, a northern Arbil neighbourhood that hosts numerous restaurants and the Turkish consulate.”A shooting in front of a restaurant in Arbil left a Turkish consulate employee and a civilian dead, and wounded a third person,” said the Kurdish internal security forces, known as the Asayish. The diplomat was identified by a local police source to AFP as the Turkish vice consul. The source said the attacker fled the scene.A spokesman for the Iraqi foreign ministry confirmed the incident and condemned the attack.Turkey’s foreign ministry said an “employee” at its Arbil consulate was killed in a shooting outside the consulate.”We are continuing our efforts with the Iraqi government and local authorities to find the perpetrators of this attack as quickly as possible,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His spokesman Ibrahim Kalin vowed “the necessary response will be given to those who committed this treacherous attack.”- ‘Heinous’ attack -The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which now leads the regional government, enjoys good political and trade relations with Turkey. But one sticking point is the PKK, which operates rear bases across Iraq’s mountainous north. The PKK is classified as a “terrorist” group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union because of the three-decade insurgency it has waged against the Turkish state.Turkey has been conducting a ground offensive and bombing campaign since May in the mountainous northern region to root out PKK pockets.Earlier this month, the PKK announced that one of those raids killed senior PKK leader Diyar Gharib Mohammed along with two other fighters.A spokesman for the PKK’s armed branch denied the group was involved in Wednesday’s shooting.According to Turkish state media, the attacker was dressed in plain clothes and carried two guns when he stormed the restaurant in Ainkawa, a bustling northern district of Arbil.Witnesses in the city said checkpoints had been quickly set up inside and around the neighbourhood. The US embassy slammed the attack as “heinous” and offered its condolences to the Turkish mission, calling for “the defence and safety of foreign diplomats and diplomatic missions in Iraq.”Several rocket attacks have targeted diplomatic missions in Iraq in recent months, including near the US and UK embassies in Baghdad’s “Green Zone.”The US in May ordered all non-essential personnel of its Baghdad embassy and Arbil consulate to leave the country. And in June, protesters gathered outside the Bahraini embassy in Baghdad.Authorities in Iraq, which is witnessing a period of relative calm since declaring victory against the Islamic State group in 2017, have pledged to protect embassies.last_img
