NASA/SpaceX SpaceX has taken another small step toward sending astronauts into space after launching the Crew Dragon capsule early Saturday morning and successfully docking with the International Space Station. spacex-demo1 SpaceX Affixed to the top of a Falcon 9 booster, the rounded cone capsule of the Crew Dragon blasted off in a blaze of fire and smoke from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 2:49 a.m. ET Saturday. The launch was the first step in the Demo-1 mission, designed to test the capabilities of the capsule over the next week, but it was only the beginning. After launch the capsule coasted to the ISS, making a number of maneuvers to line up with a specialized docking adapter aboard the station. Though live footage of the event appeared low-key, both the Crew Dragon and the ISS were traveling at over 17,500 miles per hour during the monumental docking attempt.  Crew Dragon achieved soft capture with the ISS at 5:51 a.m. ET, but the high-speed space grab wasn’t over. Shortly after, 12 hooks reached out from Crew Dragon to firmly attach it to the ISS, enabling a “hard capture” of the capsule at 6 a.m. ET and marking the first successful docking of a Commercial Crew capsule at the ISS. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft docks with the International… Now playing: Watch this: No humans are on board, but the capsule isn’t empty. Locked within Crew Dragon is a flight dummy nicknamed Ripley and an anthropomorphic plushie of planet Earth designed to indicate when the capsule had reached zero gravity. In addition, the capsule carried around 400 pounds of crew supplies and equipment to the ISS to simulate future missions.  A view from onboard the Crew Dragon as it approached the ISS. SpaceX/NASA On Saturday morning, the historic launch was celebrated with cheers and applause at Kennedy Space Center, after multiple delays pushed the maiden flight back from an expected launch in 2018. The site of the landmark launch was Pad 39A, which has previously seen NASA’s Saturn rockets carry astronauts to the moon aboard Apollo spacecraft and the famous launches of NASA’s space shuttles. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed his appreciation for both the SpaceX team and NASA at a post-launch press conference but noted the mental toll the experience had on him. “To be frank, I’m a little emotionally exhausted,” he sighed. “That was super stressful, but it worked… So far.”    Though the launch was a success, SpaceX still has a few more obstacles to overcome before the demonstration mission is complete. The capsule will remain docked at the ISS until March 8, then begin what is arguably the most important part of its demonstration: successfully returning to Earth. The capsule is fitted with enhanced parachutes and is set to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean. The Falcon 9 blasts off, carrying Crew Dragon for the first time. SpaceX Speaking of the Atlantic, the reusable Falcon 9 booster that launched Crew Dragon landed on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You drifting in the ocean, approximately 10 minutes after liftoff. As part of its Commercial Crew program, NASA handed contracts to both SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to develop rockets that could send astronauts back to space. NASA hasn’t launched humans to space since 2011, when the Space Shuttle program ended. In the meantime, the agency has paid for spots on the Russian-built Soyuz spacecraft at a cost of over $80 million per seat. That makes Saturday’s success particularly important, helping chart a course for NASA to bring launches back to American soil and keep costs down.  “We want to make sure we keep our partnership with Russia, which has been very strong for a long period of time,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said before the flight. “But we also want to make sure we have our own capability to get back and forth to the International Space Station.” The Crew Dragon separates from the Falcon 9 in Earth’s shadow. SpaceX The Crew Dragon capsule is an enhanced version of SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, which has ferried cargo from Earth to the ISS on 16 previous occasions. This iteration can carry seven human passengers, which it’ll eventually shuttle to the ISS in low Earth orbit. Provided this demo mission proceeds as planned, the Crew Dragon will have to demonstrate its safety in one more “in-flight abort test,” scheduled for later this year. If it passes that test, SpaceX and NASA will finally be ready to make another giant leap, sending astronauts to the ISS from the US for the first time since 2011. last_img read more

first_img Apple Aug 31 • Your phone screen is gross. Here’s how to clean it Microsoft is jumping on the digital health bandwagon. Gety Images For the past couple years, tech companies like Apple, Google and even Facebook have been doing something seemingly against their interests: Encouraging us to stop using them. On Monday, Microsoft joined those companies by encouraging business people to be more mindful of their time too. The new features, built into the company’s Office 365 business productivity service for Windows PCs, Macs and mobile devices, tracks how people use their computers and then displays that information on a dashboard. For example, Microsoft’s software will soon start showing people how often they focused on a task and for how long. And it will also cheer them on if they successfully disconnected after work. You can even set goals for how often you have quiet days, Microsoft said. Read on ZDNet: Microsoft Build 2019: Azure is the star, and Windows is a bit player The new features, announced at the company’s Build developer conference in Seattle, are the latest in a growing trend of tech companies aiming to make us feel better about using their devices and services. They’re doing this by encouraging us to be more mindful about how much of our lives get taken up by technology in the first place. At Apple, this comes as part of a feature called Screen Time, which shows you how often you use your phone and what types of apps you’re using most. You can also set limits on how long you can use specific apps, like Facebook. Google’s Android software for phones and tablets has a tool called Digital Wellbeing that offers similar features. Even Facebook and Instagram, which are often derided as places people zone out and lose hours tapping and scrolling, have a screen time feature. For Microsoft, these features are part of a broader refinement to Microsoft’s Office 365 business software. The suite, which includes access to the company’s popular Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook apps, is used by 180 million people. Microsoft said the new features will be available “in the next few months.”  Aug 31 • iPhone XR vs. iPhone 8 Plus: Which iPhone should you buy? first_imgInfosys, India’s second largest IT firm, has been cleared of visa violations by the US government after a three-month probe, the company said on Tuesday.”Infosys is pleased to report that the US Department of Labour (DOL) concluded its investigation with a determination of compliance regarding labour condition applications filed in the Southern California Edison project. Infosys fully cooperated with the DOL in its investigation, and over 145 files were reviewed, with no violations found,” the company said.In June 2015, the US government had ordered an investigation to probe alleged violation of rules pertaining to H-1B visa by Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The probe was initiated after two US Senators alleged that the two companies misused an H-1B visa programme to “replace hundreds of American workers” at an electric utility, Southern California Edison. Prior to the investigation, Southern California Edison had laid off over 500 technology workers.”Many said they were made to train replacements who were immigrants on temporary visas, known as H-1B, brought in by the Indian firms, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys”, an NYT report said. But Infosys has denied indulging in unfair practices.”We do not practice or condone unfair or unethical H-1B visa practices. Our key priority is to operate fairly, ethically and with integrity, which is good business and what our clients expect,” said Sandeep Dadlani, EVP and Head of Americas of Infosys. In another similar instance, an American IT professional, who worked with TCS, had filed a lawsuit against the company in April, accusing the company of practising discrimination against Americans in its US offices and favouring South Asians in hiring and promotion.Indian IT companies are among the top recipients of H-1B visas issued by the US government. The visas allow companies to hire highly skilled workers from other countries when there is non-availability of such workers in the US.Responding to the development, the Infosys stock rose more than 1% on Tuesday morning to trade at Rs 1,070, while the benchmark Sensex climbed over 190 points.Analysts are bullish on the stock. “We maintain our BUY with a price target of INR 1306 and remain positive on the IT space,” said Sarabjit Kour Nangra, VP Research, IT & Pharma, Angel Broking.last_img read more

first_imgMinniPolice took Aysha Siddika Minni to the police superintendent’s office on Tuesday morning for interrogation over the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif in broad daylight, reports UNB.A team of police went to Minni’s residence near Barguna Police Lines around 9:45am and took her to the SP’s office, said witnesses. However, SP Maruf Hossain said police brought Minni to his office to take her deposition as a witness in the murder case.Md Humayun Kabir, inspector of Sadar police station and the investigation officer of the case, and the SP were taking her deposition under section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the sake of investigation, he said.Police also sought Minni’s cooperation to identify the murder suspects, according to the SP office. The new development came after Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif and locals demanded Minni’s arrest alleging that she had part to the gruesome murder of her husband. At a press conference at Barguna Press Club on Saturday night, Dulal Sharif demanded the arrest of his daughter-in-law to investigate whether she had colluded with the killers. He had alleged that Minni concealed the matter that she was previously married to Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, the prime accused of the Rifat murder case who was killed in an alleged gunfight with police on 2 July, and she used to visit Nayan’s house frequently.Besides, instead of trying to protect Rifat on the day, she was busy with herself and even ‘helped the killers’, according to Dulal. He raised a 10-point allegation against Minni who has been made the first witness in the case.Besides, locals formed a human chain on the Barguna Press Club premises on Sunday morning to press for the same demand. Many people, including Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif, took part in the human-chain programme.Soon after the human chain, Minni arranged a press conference at her father’s house where she claimed that propaganda was being spread against her to protect the murderers. “My father-in-law (Dulal Sharif) is sick and he has no balance.”She alleged that a vested group has been out to implicate her in the case through misguiding her father-in-law so that the accused get released.About the claim that she had previously married to Nayan Bond, Minni refuted it, saying, “Why hadn’t Nayan stood in my way when I married Rifat if I had earlier married him?”Police have so far arrested 13 people in connection with the Rifat murder. Seven of them have confessed to their involvement in the murder.A video clip of the murder captured in a surveillance camera went viral on social media. It showed criminals hacking Rifat Sharif brutally in broad daylight in front of Barguna Govt College while his wife Minni was trying to save him.Rifat was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal where he died.Dulal Sharif, the father of Rifat, filed a case against 12 people.last_img read more

first_img Share Listen The United Nations has just released a report on global warming and a local expert told Houston Matters Wednesday the Bayou City has become of the American metropolises leading the way with initiatives to better protect the environment.Gavin Dillingham is program director of Clean Energy Policy at Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and said what the report presents isn’t surprising but “hopefully it’s a wake-up call to a lot of people that may not have been paying as much attention to it or that still need maybe more information or data.”Dillingham noted that, a few years ago, the City of Houston “first looked at its internal operations and really tried to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions there through just improving operations in buildings and fleet to waste management, etcetera.”“Now the City is looking to do that on a community wide basis through its Climate Action Plan,” the expert added.Dillingham also highlighted that one of the main goals of Houston’s Climate Action Plan is to meet the city’s greenhouse gas reduction goals as initially established in the Paris climate agreement, from which the Trump administration withdrew last year. For Dillingham, there are several American cities that are working towards meeting those goals and “the City of Houston has really taken a good leadership role” by trying to combine cost-effective measures that will better protect the environment but that will also promote the city’s economic vitality. The expert also underscored the fact the City of Houston has recently joined the 100 Resilient Cities Network, a $164 million global effort to build urban resilience around the world. At a regional level, the HARC expert explained his organization is working on helping a group of nine counties near the Texas Gulf Coast to prioritize efforts to combat climate change. Ok originally measured almost 15 square kilometers. Howe and Boyer said that scientists are worried all of the 400 glaciers surrounding Iceland will disappear by 2200. Dominic Boyer/Cymene HoweThe memorial plaque for the Okjökull glacier that will be unveiled August 18.The researchers also produced a documentary last year called “Not Ok,” that documented Okjökull losing its glacier title. They said their goal in bringing attention to Ok’s story is to “move beyond the science question.”“We wanted to move beyond this question of constantly being worried about the science,” Howe said. “Because it doesn’t seem to be getting us where we need to be, which is collectively coming to an agreement about how we can all collectively turn back the dials on CO2 and other emissions that are causing global warming.”On the plaque, the figure “415 ppm CO2” is inscribed to represent the record-breaking levels of carbon dioxide that were recorded in the atmosphere earlier this year. Howe said this serves as a reminder of what’s at stake. “If we extend out our thinking beyond this little glacier in Iceland, we can see that there are really dramatic environmental impacts that are affecting not just people who live near glaciers, but people who live along coasts everywhere in the world,” she said. This thinking also applies to Houston, even though the city is far away from any glaciers or ice sheets. “If we let this amount of CO2 stay in the atmosphere, Houston will literally go under water,” said Boyer. “And that’s not going to happen tomorrow, but it’s almost guaranteed without substantial changes.”The plaque will be unveiled at the site of Okjökull on August 18. Listen to the researchers discuss the glacier on Houston Matters in the audio below: Listen Sharelast_img read more
