Tweet this comment Cancel Submit Comment Subscribe to None Replies All new comments Elizabeth Tompkinsby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Elizabeth Tompkins, a 2013 Wellington High School graduate and a student at Cowley County Community College, was awarded two scholarships to Newman University in Wichita.Tompkins was awarded Newman University’s Board of Trustees Scholarship, which is worth $32,000 over four years ($8,000 a year). Eligibility for the Board of Trustees scholarship requires the students have at least a 3.3 GPA and a score of 23 on the ACT or equivalent SAT. Recipients are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester and may renew the scholarship up to eight consecutive semesters, as long as all renewal criteria are met.She also was awarded the Dual Admissions Scholarship which is worth $6,000 over two years. To be eligible for this scholarship a student must be accepted and/or enrolled at one of the partner schools.Tompkins is graduating from Cowley in May 2014 with an Associate of Science Degree one year earlier than most.During her years attending WHS, Tompkins was involved in National Honor Society, SADD, Student Council, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. By the time she graduated in May 2013 she had earned 24 college credit hours between Cowley College and Southwestern College in Winfield.While in high school she shadowed at SRMC for four years in various departments to get hospital experience.Outside of school, Tompkins enjoys working at Wellington Healthmart Pharmacy and babysitting.She is an active member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoys attending weekly.As a senior, Tompkins was awarded various scholarships which included the Sicily Zeka Scholarship, the SRMC scholarship, along with several others. She is presently a member of the Phi Theta Kappa program.Her future plans include attending Newman University in the fall of 2014 and excelling in their nursing program. After graduation at Newman she would like to practice pediatric nursing.last_img read more
