first_imgFloyd’s death has sparked national outrage, and social justice demonstrations turned violent this week in Minneapolis and beyond. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz activated the National Guard on Thursday in order to “help protect Minnesotans’ safety and maintain peace.”Kaepernick’s posts on Twitter and Instagram, both shared Thursday afternoon, addressed the rising anger across the country.MORE: Stephen Jackson opens up about friendship with George Floyd”When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction,” Kaepernick said. “The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears, because your violence has brought this resistance.”We have the right to fight back! Rest in power George Floyd.” A post shared by colin kaepernick (@kaepernick7) on May 28, 2020 at 9:47am PDTThe four officers involved in Floyd’s death were fired, which Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said was “the right call.” The officer who was seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck in the video was later identified as Derek Chauvin. The FBI is investigating the incident. Colin Kaepernick is fully behind the ongoing protests taking place following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.A video surfaced Monday showing a Minneapolis police officer pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck near a squad car. (Officers were responding to a report of a suspected forgery at the time.) Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe, and at one point he stopped moving and appeared to be unconscious. Floyd later died at a local hospital. Kaepernick became a prominent voice for social justice after choosing to kneel during the national anthem in 2016 while playing for the 49ers. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in August 2016. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”UPDATE: Chauvin was taken into custody and has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday afternoon.
