first_imgThe Congress that had not very long ago rubbished allegations of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that EVMs were tampered with during the Punjab Assembly elections earlier this year, has leveled similar charges in the ongoing polls in Gujarat. The volte-face by a section of the local team in Gujarat has left a larger dominant leadership sharply divided over the issue. The allegations of faulty EVMs by Congress leaders have prompted the same response its own leaders had fired at the AAP after the party came a distant second in Punjab. The BJP has mocked the Congress of staring at defeat and pulling out excuses in advance.”The Congress had introduced EVMs and it will be very foolish of us to blame an electoral loss on its tampering. While the party has put the BJP on the backfoot right on Narendra Modi’s home turf, if we do not manage to win, we should be a sport and take it on our chin instead of making excuses like the AAP,” said a senior party functionary.Playing down the controversy, Gujarat Congress chief Bharatsinh Solanki told Mail Today, “It is not an unknown fact that some EVMs were found faulty and the Election Commission had to conduct repolls there. But we trust the EC and are sure of a victory.”Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ajay Maken, who was faced with the same dilemma of whether to back AAP’s claims of EVM tampering during the municipal polls earlier this year, maintained, “I cannot comment on the issue in Gujarat, but in our past experience in Delhi, I had written to Arvind Kejriwal before the municipal polls backing the demand for ballot papers for more transparency in the polling process. But once the elections were announced, we decided to put our faith in the EC and did not question its role in conducting free and fair polls.”advertisementSeveral other senior leaders across state units refused to comment on the issue citing lack of clarity on the party’s official stand.During the first phase of polling on Saturday, senior Congress leader and former Gujarat unit chief Arjun Modhwadia, who is contesting from Porbandar, alleged that mobile phones were detecting some external devices connected to EVMs at polling booths in his constituency.”The chips fitted in EVMs appear to be programmable using bluetooth, and this raises the possibility of tampering,” alleged Modhwadia.Chief electoral officer BB Swain later said as per the inquiry report, the complainant’s phone was detecting another device identified as ‘ECO 105’ giving rise to apprehensions of possible tampering and rubbished foul play. Modhwadia was then backed by senior party colleagues such as Shaktisinh Gohil and Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Patel.ALSO WATCH: BJP rakes up Ram Mandir as it can’t show any development, says Hardik Patellast_img read more
