first_imgNEW DELHI: Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes the current Indian team lacks belief while playing in the knockout stages of multi-lateral tournaments and that’s why they end up on the losing side while playing in the semi-finals and finals.India last won an ICC event in 2013 when M.S. Dhoni led the side to win the Champions Trophy in England. Since then, they have entered the semi-finals of both the 50-overs World Cups but lost there. Similarly, they lost to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2017 final. “What sets you apart from being a good player to being a very very good player in a team squad is what you do in those crucial games. I think probably we have not been able to handle the pressure, probably other teams have been able to handle the pressure that way,” Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports show Cricket Connected. “If you look at all the semi-finals and finals, it just show when playing really well in the league stage and you don’t play well in the semi-finals or knockout, it’s probably your mental toughness as well,” he added. The former Indian opener, who was part of the Indian team in both the successful campaigns at the 2007 World T20 as well as the 2011 World Cup, believes unless and until our team proves on the field and emerge victorious in the knockout stages of the tournament, they cannot be termed as world champions. “We can keep talking that we’ve got everything, we have the ability to be the world champions but till the time you don’t go on the cricket field and prove that, you will never be called the world champion,” said Gambhir. One of the problems with the Men in Blue in the recent ICC events has been their inability to take their momentum of the league stage into the knockouts. For instance, in the 2019 World Cup, Virat Kohli’s men had topped the league stage but they faltered in the semi-final clash against New Zealand. The 24-year-old Frenchman finished 0.415 seconds ahead of McLaren driver Carlos Sainz and 3.358 ahead of Racing Point’s Lance Stroll on a surreal-looking podium. All three drivers had never won a race and each had only one top-three finish to their name.Hamilton appeared on course for a comfortable victory from pole position but he was given the stop-go penalty for entering the pit lane when closed. The Mercedes driver finished seventh, 17.245 behind Gasly.Ferrari’s abysmal weekend continued as Sebastian Vettel had a brake failure on Lap 7 and he limped into the pits with his right-rear brake disc in flames. It was the four-time champion’s first DNF at Monza in his 14th start. His teammate Charles Leclerc had made it into fourth but lost the rear of the car under acceleration through Parabolica on Lap 25 and crashed into the barriers, causing the race to be red flagged.By that time Hamilton’s penalty had been announced. Hamilton had pitted immediately after the safety car had been deployed after Kevin Magnussen broke down but was unaware the pit lane was closed as the marshals recovered Magnussen’s Haas.Antonio Giovinazzi received the same sanction.(Image Credit: AP) last_img read more

first_imgThe postponement of the Euro Cup from this summer to the summer of 2021 has meant that the door is opened to the end of the current national leagues in Europe affected by the coronavirus, including the Second Division. Despite the fact that everything is in the embryonic phase and pending the evolution of the health crisis, what seems certain is thate, if the current format is maintained, the silver competition in Spanish football would extend beyond June 30, the end date of contracts. In this scenario, CD Lugo would have a serious problem of troops to face or, rather, a serious administrative problem. The albivermello team is one of the teams that has the most players on loan on its roster (seven starters and three more on the bench), with what the Lugo they would have to renegotiate the transfers of these footballers with the clubs that own their rights to be able to count on them in their ranks in the final stretch of the campaign and with the team surely playing for permanence. But in addition, Lugo has a series of players who end their contractual relationship with Lugo on June 30 and for whom, for the moment, there has been no news about its renewal. José Carlos, Josete, Campabadal, Leuko and Carrillo end their contract in principle on the indicated date, and their renewal would become a priority if the league competition goes beyond that limit.Since this problem will not be exclusive to CD Lugo, but rather a global situation, It is expected that from the Professional Football League some measure will be articulated to solve the problem. What is clear is that the players must be clear about their employment relationship, since it would be difficult for them to suffer an injury with their contract already finished and without coverage or the option of a new card.last_img read more
